Australian Racing: Detonator Jack can blow away the competition

There’s Group 1 action in Western Australia on Saturday with the Railway Stakes set to take place over 1600m.

The only other Group race of the day takes place on the undercard, with the 2023 renewal of the Group 2 WA Guineas.

Race 8 Ascot

Tuvalu @ 4.60

Race 7 Ascot

Zipaway @ 8.50

Race 7 Kembla Grange

Detonator Jack @ 5.50

Tuvalu for Railway success

The feature race of the day has attracted 16 declarations, with the race set to take place on a soft 5 track.

Grant & Alana Williams runners have to be respected in these parts and they send out star mare Alsephina who is expected to jump as favourite from barrier seven.

The mare has registered second-place finishes in Group 3 company in both starts this season, including when beaten by half-a-length in the R.J. Peters Stakes over 1500m here last week.

The five-year-old had shown progressive form last season, ending it with a victory in the Group 3 La Trice Classic over 1800m here in January, with that success marking her sixth consecutive victory.

Regular pilot William Pike is again in the saddle here and, while she rates a worthy favourite, TUVALU, who ships in from Melbourne, is preferred on this occasion.

The gelding has registered some good efforts in defeat this spell, including when a length second in the 1800m Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield in September.

The pick has made just one start since with that, when beaten less than half-a-length into third in the Group 2 Crystal Mile at Moonee Valley on 28th October.

Jamie Kah, set to ride here, was on board for both of those efforts and her mount is a tactically versatile sort with a good barrier in four here.

The soft 5 track forecast is no issue for the pick, who won at this level in wet conditions when taking the Toorak Handicap in October last year and he is taken to defy top weight in this event.

Zipaway for Guineas glory

The previously mentioned Group 2 WA Guineas over 1600m takes place as the seventh race of the day at Ascot.

The three-year-old filly Keshi Boom puts her unbeaten record on the line, having registered three victories since debuting with a success over 1200m at Belmont Park in July.

The most recent of those saw the daughter of Spirit Of Boom finish strongly to deliver a one-and-a-half-length victory in the Group 3 WA Champion Fillies Stakes over this track and trip.

While the distance is in her favour and she has won on a wet track in the past, she tackles male rivals here and ZIPAWAY is selected to get the better of her in this event.

Trained by Neville Parnham, the gelding has plenty of experience and won his first two starts this spell, including in the 1400m Print Hall Plate over 1400m on 21st October.

The selection lost out by one-and-a-half lengths when fourth in the 1400m Seacorp - Fairetha Stakes, held on a good 4 track at Ascot earlier this month.

The gelding finished strongly from off the pace having started awkwardly that day and, with the extra distance here expected to suit, he is selected to return to winning ways.

Jack for Kembla Grange success

DETONATOR JACK has shown a liking for wet tracks in the past and he is taken to salute in The Illawarra Mercury Gong over 1600m at Kembla Grange.

The $1,000,000 contest is set to take place as the seventh race of the day, with the pick having shown good placed form on good going in recent starts.

The five-year-old lost out by a narrow margin when tackling the 1500m Five Diamonds Prelude at Randwick last month.

The pick went on to place in the big race itself, losing out by half-a-length in the 1800m feature contest at Rosehill and he has Jason Collett, on board for both of those starts, up once more.

The application of blinkers should sharpen the selection up having dropped back to 1600m and he can provide the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace team with a win here.
