Australian Racing: Dog to Swoop in Hobart Cup

There’s eight meetings for punters to get involved with on Sunday including metro action from Hobart.

Race 8 Hobart

Swoop Dog @ 8/1

Race 5 Werribee

Samedi @ 12/5

Race 6 Geraldton

Go Go Gracie @ 13/2

Swoop to continue winning run in Cup

The feature race of the day is the 2400m Group 3 Hobart Cup due off as the penultimate race on a nine race card at Hobart.

A soft 5 track is forecast with Spirit Ridge expected to jump as favourite for the Annabel Neasham team. The eight-year-old has shown good form this spell following up a close fourth in the Group 3 Summer Cup at Randwick with a Benchmark 100 triumph at Flemington.

Riduna drawn to succeed

Both of those efforts came over 2000m on good 4 tracks. The softer surface and extra distance proved no issue however when three lengths second in the Australia Day Cup over 2400m at Warwick Farm last time. Blake Shinn’s mount has to concede weight to all of his rivals here and with that in mind the local runner Swoop Dog is preferred.

John Blacker’s mount has shown good form this spell completing a hat-trick when taking out the 2200m Summer Cup on a good 4 track here last month.

Had previously scored at Devenport Synthetic in an 1880m event and he shapes as if he’ll appreciate the 2400m trip he gets here. Sigrid Carr, on board for all five starts this spell keeps the ride on the gelding who has shown he handles wet tracks in the past.

Samedi to score at Werribee

Albanian Eagle is likely to have her supporters ahead of the fifth race at Werribee. The Restricted 58 handicap has attracted a field of 11 with a good 4 track expected. Reece Goodwin’s charge has been kept busy this spell but has managed second place finishes in three of his last four starts.

Suffered a narrow defeat when runner-up in a Restricted 64 contest over 1724m at Sale earlier this month. While the five-year-old is effective at this trip here best recent form has come over further and she looks opposable in this contest.

Samedi is selected to double his career tally in this contest with Zac Spain taking the ride. The four-year-old broke his maiden at Cranbourne over 1400m first up this spell and has delivered some solid efforts in defeat of late.

The selection comes into this event on the back of a good third having raced close to the pace in a 1450m Benchmark 58 event at Kilmore. Had previously shown a liking for this venue when a close second at this level in a 1429m event three weeks earlier.

Has run well over further in the past so the step up to 1606m should prove no issue with the four-year-old taken to provide trainer Charlotte Littlefield with a winner.

Gracie for Geraldton glory

Trainer Barry Newnham boasts an impressive 32% strike-rate at Geraldton in the last 12 months and his Go Go Gracie looks capable of helping him improve on that.

The three-year-old filly is one of four runners on the card for Newnham and she is due to line up in the sixth race on the card. The 1400m Class 1 handicap sees a field of 12 go to post including the three-year-old filly.

Go Go Gracie showed ability in her first three starts but took a step forward when winning by a length over 1100m at this venue in a maiden on a good 3 track in December.

The change of tactics to racing closer to the pace appeared to suit on that occasion. Subsequently delivered a fourth place finish when beaten nearly two-and-a-half-lengths over the same track and trip in a Class 2 event.

Well drawn in two here she looks ready for this step up in distance and looks up to recording a victory with regular pilot Petra Edwards up.
