Australian Racing: Doola Teela set for the double

There's four meetings for punters to get involved with on Monday with country fixtures from Orange, Benalla, Port Macquarie and Thangool.

Race 4 Orange

Doola Teela @ 4.00

Race 6 Benalla

Mischinka @ 15.00

Race 7 Port Macquarie

Barcoo River @ 7.00

Doola to double up

The fourth at Orange is a competitive looking 1410m Class 2 handicap. A soft 5 track is forecast with Diamond Hands expected to have his supporters with Brad Rawiller up. The four-year-old caught the eye when runner-up in a 1200m Benchmark 66 event at Mudgee recently.

Trainer Bjorn Baker boasts a good record at this track but a wide alley isn't ideal and he looks opposable over this distance. Doola Teela delivered a number of respectable efforts in maiden company prior to breaking her maiden last time out.

These efforts included a two-and-a-half-lengths fifth over 1300m at Kembla Grange on a good 4 track on her penultimate start. The step up to 1400m and the soft 5 track appeared to suit the daughter of Star Turn when she delivered an impressive maiden victory at Goulburn on January 23.

The selection raced prominently that day having jumped from barrier seven in the ten horse field. Winona Costin's mount has drawn a good barrier three off the rail here and is selected to complete a double.

Mischinka for Benalla success

Zac Spain's mount Super Solar is expected to jump as favourite for the sixth at Benalla. The race in question is a 1606m Benchmark 58 contest set to take place on a good 4 surface.

Trained by Reece Goodwin the gelding returned from a break with a good second over 1200m in a Restricted 58 event at Kyneton earlier this month. That Kyneton effort came on a heavy 8 surface but having won twice on good going the track conditions here will be no issue.

The five-year-old followed that Kyneton effort up with a three length third over 1300m at Bendigo just over a week ago. Handles this distance but may prove vulnerable in this event with Mischinka taken to spring a surprise for the Ben Brisbourne stable.

The veteran mare has won once and placed three times from three starts at this venue including when runner-up in a similar race to this in February last year. Has delivered some respectable efforts at a higher level this spell including when fifth over this trip in a Benchmark 64 event at Moonee Valley in November.

The mare heads into this on the back of a fourth in a Benchmark 58 event over 1590m at Wodonga ten days ago. Jockey Fiona Sandkuhl takes a valuable three kilograms off the daughter of Redente's back and looks capable of steering her to a sixth career win.

River for Port Macquarie success

The finale at Port Macquarie is an intriguing 1200m Benchmark 58 contest. The twice-raced King's Duty looks a leading player having made a winning debut when scoring by two-and-a-half-lengths at Beaumont on January 30.

That victory cam in an 1150m maiden on a heavy 9 surface. However the three-year-old proved a disappointment when odds-on for a Benchmark 66 over the same track and trip subsequently. Expected to try and make all in this contest he may find Barcoo River too strong in this event.

Trained by Kris Lees the pick broke his maiden when coming from off the pace to score by a narrow margin over 1200m at Tamworth earlier this month.

That success came on a good 4 track having taken a big step forward following a down the field effort on debut at Kembla Grange last August. A wide barrier should prove no issue given the Choisir gelding's racing style and Darryl McLellan looks up to steering him to victory.
