Australian Racing: Dreamzel to win at Moonee Valley

There are a number of meetings set to take place on Friday, including at Canterbury and Moonee Valley.

Race 7 Canterbury

Welcome Gypsy @ 8.00

Race 5 Moonee Valley

Dreamzel @ 3.80

Race 5 Sunshine Coast

No Name Frank @ 3.80

Welcome Gypsy to complete hat-trick

The most valuable race of the day is the penultimate contest on Canterbury’s eight-race program.

The contest in question is an 1100m Benchmark 72 handicap set to take place on a soft 6 surface.

David Pfieffer’s Vegas Raider is expected to jump as favourite for the race, having registered some good efforts in defeat this prep.

Two of those efforts have come at this venue, including when fourth of eighth in a similar race to this over track and trip first up.

The gelding went on to finish fifth over the same distance at Randwick, prior to being beaten just under three-and-a-half-lengths when fifth here last time.

Soft going expected here is no issue, however, you have to go back to November 2023 to find the five-year-old’s most recent win and he is expected to find at least one too good.

The mare WELCOME GYPSY has been in good form this prep, registering wins in both appearances since finishing two-length second over 1000m at Wyong on her return to action.

Welcome Gypsy contested a Benchmark 64 handicap held on a good 3 surface on that occasion, with both of her wins subsequently also coming on a sound surface.

The six-year-old has gone well on wet tracks in the past, including when placing on a heavy 10 at Newcastle in June last year.

John Thompson’s mare has the distance to suit here, having won over this distance in a Benchmark 64 handicap on her penultimate start.

A change of tactics this prep has seen the mare race closer to the speed and, while she steps up in grade here, she is taken to continue her good run of form with a win.

Dreamzel for Moonee Valley glory

The fifth race of the day at Moonee Valley is a 1000m Benchmark 64 handicap expected to be held on a good 4 track.

Tax Free Prophet won at Mornington at the start of November and is expected to feature prominently in the market having been freshened since his latest effort.

That latest effort saw the seven-year-old finish third when beaten two-and-a-half-lengths over this distance in a Benchmark 64 handicap at Mornington in December.

While the gelding rates highly for trainer Jason Warren, preference is for DREAMZEL who has made two starts this prep.

The filly’s first effort saw her beaten just over three-and-a-half-lengths in finishing sixth in a 1000m Benchmark 64 handicap held on the Heath course at Caulfield in December.

Tom Dabernig’s representative broke through for a second up win when successful by half-a-length in a 1075m Benchmark 68 handicap at Penola subsequently.

The daughter of Deep Field returns to metro racing here and, while she goes well on good going, any softening of the ground would be a positive having won three times on wet tracks last year.

Jockey Jordyn Weatherley has won twice on the filly in the past and the pair look capable of helping her improve on her 31% strike-rate (34/109) when riding for trainer Tom Dabernig.

No Name Frank for Sunshine Coast success

The fifth race at Sunshine Coast is an interesting Benchmark 65 handicap set to take place over 1200m.

A good 4 track is expected for the contest, with NO NAME FRANK the pick to provide trainer Lindsay Gough with a winner.

The five-year-old gelding broke through for his first win when contesting an 1100m maiden at Ipswich on debut in April last year.

No Name Frank raced on a soft 5 track that day and again encountered a wet track when resuming with a win over this course and distance in October.

While unable to win in two subsequent outings, the son of Super One has acquitted himself well on each occasion including when fourth here last time.

Georgina Cartwright, on board for all four previous starts, is again set to ride and her mount, who has been freshened since his latest effort, is taken to return to winning ways.
