Australian Racing: Eaglemont can soar to victory

There are six meetings set to take place on Thursday including an eight-race card at Ballina.

Race 5 Pakenham

Eight Martinis @ 6.00

Race 7 Ballina

Eaglemont @ 2.50

Race 7 Tamworth

Exonumia @ 4.60

Martinis for Pakenham success

The fifth race of the day at Pakenham is a competitive looking 2000m Restricted 64 handicap contest.

A good 4 track is expected for the race, with Michael Kent’s Choquant likely to have his supporters following a victory at Mornington earlier this month.

The five-year-old triumphed in a 2040m Restricted 64 handicap held on a soft 7 track on that occasion.

However quicker going is expected here and, while he broke his maiden on the forecast good 4 surface, it can pay to look elsewhere.

The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace team send out EIGHT MARTINIS here, with the gelding having caught the eye when runner-up over 1600m at Bendigo on his penultimate start.

The selection finished strongly having raced from off the pace on a good 4 track that day, finishing less than one-and-a-half-lengths behind the winner.

The selection went on to deliver his first victory when ridden closer to the speed over this trip in a maiden contest held on a good 4 surface at the end of last month.

The four-year-old won by a narrow margin on that occasion, however, it’s notable that the front two finished five-lengths clear of the rest of the field in a nine-runner contest.

The pick is another who is open to improvement and, with Ben Allen up, he looks capable of completing a double.

Eaglemont for Cup glory

The Ballina Cup is set to jump as the penultimate race on an eight-race card due to take place on a heavy 9 track at Ballina.

The 1590m contest has attracted a field of 15, including Kyle Wilson-Taylor’s mount Without Revenge, who has placed at Listed level in his two most recent starts.

The second of those saw him contest the 1600m Bernborough Plate on a good 4 track at Eagle Farm just over a month ago.

The six-year-old, fourth in the valuable Little Dance at Randwick three starts back, isn't certain to appreciate the underfoot conditions here however, with EAGLEMONT the pick.

The selection has placed on a heavy 10 track and demonstrated good form in winning three times in 2023.

Those victories included a one-and-a-half-length victory in a 1615m Benchmark 85 handicap held on a soft 5 track at Doomben at the end of last month.

The gelding met plenty of trouble in running when sixth in the previously mentioned Little Dance at Randwick and he has a good barrier two off the rail.

Trainer Matthew Dunn has been in great form of late, with nine of his last 11 runners finishing in the first three and his representative is taken to deliver a victory.

Exonumia for Cup triumph

The penultimate race at Tamworth is the Country Music Cup set to take place over 1200m on a good 4 track.

EXONUMIA showed good form when runner-up when racing at Benchmark 74 level on a soft 5 track at this venue at the end of November.

The selection tracked the speed on that occasion, having previously placed third in a 1400m Class 3 handicap at Scone just over two weeks earlier.

The gelding has placed on four of his five starts this spell, with the sole exception coming when fifth at Quirindi when resuming at the end of August.

Cody Morgan’s gelding has been given a short break since the previously mentioned second here and, racing off a nice racing weight, he is selected to record a victory.
