Elliptical for Flemington glory

Flemington plays host to the Group 1 Australian Guineas over 1600m with the scratchings of Osipenko and Lindermann leaving a field of 15 to go to post for the seventh race on the card.

Queen out to Boss it at Sandown

The impressive Jacquinot heads the market for the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr team having won both starts so far this spell. The most recent of those victories came when tackling older horses in the Group 1 1400m C.F. Orr Stakes on a good 3 track at Sandown Hillside last month.

Awarded that race following interference by the front-running Gentleman Roy and shapes as if he will have no issue with the step up to 1600m. Barrier 11 may prove more of an issue however with Elliptical taken to get the better of Damian Lane’s mount having drawn a good alley two off the rail.

The son of Dundeel is proven at this distance having registered a close second over the trip in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas at Caulfield back in October. The pick followed that effort up with a close second when contesting the 2000m Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes on a soft 6 track at Randwick.

Spelled following a disappointing Flemington effort but returned with a victory over 1400m in a Group 3 event at this circuit two weeks ago. Trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman the pick raced from off the pace in that contest and while he handles the good going forecast any softening of the ground would prove no issue.

Osipenko for Guineas glory

The second of the two Group 1 Guineas races is the 1600m Randwick Guineas at Randwick. A good 4 track is expected with the James Cummings stable saddling likely favourite Aft Cabin.

Ridden by James McDonald the colt returned from a spell to deliver a victory by over one-and-three-quarter-lengths in the Group 3 Fujitsu General Eskimo Prince over 1200m at this venue early last month. Failed to repeat that effort when a disappointing odds-on favourite for the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes over 1400m at Rosehill subsequently.

Eased late on having been crowded that day and he has to prove his stamina stepping up in distance. Osipenko finished behind Aft Cabin in the previously mentioned Group 3 Fujitsu General Eskimo Prince. Chris Wallers’ colt was beaten three-and-a-half-lengths into fifth on that occasion having been ridden from off the pace.

The pick found the trip too short on that occasion and it was no surprise to see him take a step forward to take the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes over 1400m at Rosehill. The son of Pierro is a proven performer at this distance having placed third in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas on a soft 5 track at Caulfield last October.

Veteran hoop Nash Rawiller’s mount has a good barrier in four and is taken to record a first top level victory

Artorius to resume with Canterbury victory

Earlier on the card Imperatriz looks likely to jump at odds-on for the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes over 1300m. The New Zealand-raider has won all three starts this spell including the Group 1 Bcd Group Sprint over 1400m at Te Rapa on February 11.

James McDonald is a positive jockey booking but Artorius is preferred on this occasion. The four-year-old is a useful performer at this level and showed good form when shipped to Europe following a sixth in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap at Flemington in March.

The son of Flying Artie placed third twice in Group 1 sprints over 1200m and while absent since a third over this trip at Deauville in August he looks capable of resuming with a victory.
