Australian Racing: Express aims to be Glorious at Cairns

There are seven meetings set to take place on Monday including provincial fixtures at Cairns, Esperance and Murray Bridge GH.

Race 5 Cairns

Glorious Express @ 11/5

Race 7 Esperance

Warzchantz @ 13/2

Race 6 Moruya

Akeed @ 13/2

Express to score at Cairns

Master Orr is expected to prove popular in the fifth at Cairns. The race, a 950m handicap has attracted a field of eight with a soft 7 surface forecast.

Formerly with Julie Russell the gelding has made just the four appearances to date placing on both starts this spell. Registered a fair third in a Class 2 contest over 1200m at Townsville when last in action.

Freshened up since the five-year-old won over course and distance in a maiden contest last February. Made all on that occasion but has been ridden with more restraint this spell.

Drawn widest of all the Master Of Design gelding is expected to have issues giving weight away to Glorious Express.

The pick finished in front of Mark Dale’s charge when the pair met on these terms just under a year ago.

Glorious Express showed a liking for this venue when breaking his maiden over track and trip in November. Has placed on two of his three subsequent starts including when runner-up over 1000m at Townsville.

Justin P Stanley’s mount would ideally prefer quicker ground but with a good draw is taken to overcome the soft going forecast to double his career tally.

Warzchantz for Esperance success

The finale as Esperance is a competitive looking 1600m Class 5 handicap contest.

Course regular Just Striking completed a hat-trick over 1400m here when winning in this grade last month.

Raced from off the pace for each of those three victories but notably has failed to score in two starts at this trip.

Most recent of those came when fourth in a ten runner event in February last year. Has the forecast underfoot conditions to suit and rates a worthy favourite.

Drawn in four Fair Justice has shown solid form here of late including when runner-up to Just Striking over 1400m on 16th December.

Subsequently placed third in a course and distance Benchmark 56+ contest. A dual winner here in the past she is another with strong claims.

Down the field in that 16th December contest was Warzchantz who was beaten just over two-and-a-half-lengths into seventh.

Racing second up that day Lisa Staples mount had previously finished fourth behind Fair Justice over the same track and trip.

Shapes as if the step back up to 1600m will suit and the seven-year-old won a similar race here 12 months ago.

Trainer Gary Burger was on the mark when teaming up with jockey Staples a week ago and the pair can score with Warzchantz in this contest.

Akeed to complete Moruya double

Trainer Jamie Stewart looks capable of taking the sixth at Moruya with his top weight Akeed.

The selection was on the mark at the New South Wales venue on 18th December and is the handlers only runner on the card.

The son of Akeed Mofeed delivered a near one-and-a-half-length success when making all on that occasion.

That triumph came over 1010m on a good 4 track, but he has won over this track and trip in the past including on 3rd January last year.

Ordinarily a draw in seven is far from ideal for the seven-year-old however there’s no obvious pace rival in this field.

Billy Owen, on board when Akeed won last time out is again in the saddle and can steer the selection to a ninth career success.
