Gift for Swan Hill success

The fifth race at Swan Hill is a 1600m Benchmark 58 handicap contest.

A field of 18 have been declared for the race, with I Never Dreamed expected to have her supporters for the Ben, JD & Will Hayes team.

The three-year-old registered a solid fourth when beaten less than two-and-a-half-lengths in a five runner Benchmark 70 handicap at Moonee Valley first up.

The filly went on to fill the same position when contesting a 1400m Benchmark 64 handicap at Pakenham subsequently and she steps up in distance here.

However, preference is for stablemate GIFT OF ORATORY, who will jump from barrier eight here having been lightly-raced in the last year.

The selection came home in front when contesting a 2050m maiden on a good 4 track at Wodonga in February last year, however, he has made just three subsequent starts.

The most recent of those saw him suffer a six-length defeat when contesting a 1300m Benchmark 64 handicap at Bendigo last month.

The pick raced on a sound surface on that occasion and, with his only previous wet track experience coming in a stronger event in May last year, better is expected here.

The four-year-old is expected to have improved for the previously mentioned Bendigo effort, while the extra distance here is also in his favour.

Apprentice Rose Hammond takes a valuable two-kilograms off the gelding’s back and the pair look up to registering a victory.

Al to salute at Cairns

The sixth race at Cairns is a 1250m Class 3 set weights event set to take place on a soft 6 surface.

Redavni recorded three wins at Townsville in 2023 and she is expected to prove popular on her first start away from that track.

The filly registered her most recent success in a 1300m handicap on a good 4 track there in May last year.

While the four-year-old failed to shine when seventh over 1300m in a handicap event in July, she has been given a long break since that effort.

The daughter of Invader went well fresh last year and is expected to go well from barrier nine.

BETTA AL is the pick here however, having registered wins in two of his three starts at this venue.

The three-year-old ended 2023 with a seventh when contesting a 1200m handicap at Townsville in November.

The gelding raced on a good 4 track that day and was spelled following that effort with his return to action coming here at the start of last month.

The Better Than Ready gelding lost his unbeaten record when fourth over 1250m in a Benchmark 60 handicap on a soft 6 track on that occasion.

The selection is expected to have improved for that effort however and is selected to return to winning ways.

Recognition for Cairns glory

The finale at Cairns is a 1250m open handicap contest, with top weight FULL RECOGNITION looking up to delivering a victory here.

The gelding won three times in his last prep, including when delivering a second up success in a similar race to this over course and distance in June.

The selection won by a narrow margin when racing on a soft 6 surface that day and similar underfoot conditions are expected for this race.

Trained by Stephen Massingham, the veteran ticks plenty of boxes here with a good barrier and, having twice won first up in the past, he is taken to resume with a win.
