Australian Racing: Jaykayann set to strike

There’s three meetings set to take place today with action from Ballarat, Taree and Rockhampton.

Race 5 Ballarat

Jaykayann @ 4.80

Race 6 Rockhampton

Sizzling Samurai @ 3.50

Race 8 Taree

Ugly Nicos @ 4.20

Ann to score for Payne

The fifth race at Ballarat is an interesting Restricted 64 handicap with a field of 11 set to go to post for the 1600m contest. A soft 5 surface is expected with the twice-raced Pireonti likely to jump as favourite having broken her maiden at the second time of asking when scoring over 1700m at Warrnambool.

That victory came by nearly two lengths on a good 4 surface last month however the three-year-old has shown she handles wet tracks having debuted with a second on a heavy 8 surface. Patrick Payne’s Jaykayann is preferred on this occasion having finished a close up fourth when debuting on a soft 7 track at Echuga last July.

The daughter of Tavistock duly broke her maiden at the second attempt when saluting by two lengths over this trip on a heavy 9 surface at Swan Hill in September. Had a dual subsequent winner in Jilted Lover back in second on that occasion and was spelled subsequently.

The selection delivered a respectable sixth having raced from off the pace over 1406m on a good 3 track at Benalla when making her return to the track last month. Laura Lafferty’s mount is expected to have improved for that effort and back up to 1600m is selected to register her second career success.

Samurai to break maiden at Rockhampton

El Of A Senorita is expected to have her supporters following two placed efforts on good 4 tracks from as many career starts. The second of those came when beaten nearly three-and-a-half-lengths over 1050m at this venue last month.

The extra distance she tackles here looks likely to suit but the in form Nick Walsh yard are represented by Sizzling Samurai who is preferred on this occasion.

The Walsh stable have won with four of their last five runners and can boast a 40% strike-rate (25/63) at this venue in the last year. Sizzling Samurai has registered third place finishes in both starts this time around including on a good 4 track at Mackay last month.

The pick suffered a two length defeat when contesting a 1300m event having raced from off the pace that day. Prior to that the son of Sizzling had raced prominently when contesting a maiden over the same trip on a soft 6 surface here the previous month.

Leslie Tilley is a good jockey booking here and while the selection drops in trip he has drawn a good barrier in five and is taken to break his maiden at the seventh attempt.

Nicos to complete double

The finale at Taree is an 11 runner Benchmark 66 contest set to take place over 1308m. Ugly Nicos catches the eye here for trainer Paul L Shailer having put a heavy defeat in a Class 5 at Tuncurry behind him when scoring on a good 4 track at Armidale last month.

That Armidale triumph came over 1400m in a Class 1 contest having raced behind the speed for much of the contest. The pick had jumped at big odds in the previously mentioned Class 5 prior to that and while he suffered a defeat when runner-up in a Benchmark 58 event here in January that did come at 1600m.

The shorter distance here should prove no issue having finished runner-up over 1313m at Coffs Harbour at the end of December. The Fastnet Rock gelding has a fair barrier in eight and is selected to record a third career success.
