Australian Racing: Jimmysstar can dazzle at Newcastle

There are a number of meetings set to take place on Friday including at Moonee Valley.

Race 6 Moonee Valley

Harmonious Senora @ 11.00

Race 8 Moonee Valley

Zou Sensation @ 6.00

Race 7 Newcastle

Jimmysstar @ 1.60

Harmonious to complete Valley double

The sixth race at the Valley is the Summer Middle Distance Series Final set to take place over the Cox Plate trip of 2040m.

Ciaron Maher is due to saddle top weight Lauding in the race, with the gelding expected to have his supporters following a number of good runs this prep.

The New Zealand-bred gelding registered a good second when beaten less than half-a-length in a 2100m Benchmark 70 event at Sandown Lakeside last month.

The four-year-old followed that up with a track and trip triumph when coming home nearly three lengths clear of his rivals in a Benchmark 70 event here.

While the son of Proisir arrives here in good form, he has a wide alley to overcome and with that in mind it can pay to look elsewhere.

Trained by Charmaine Barnes, HARMONIOUS SENORA is the winner of two of her last three starts.

The first of those saw her triumph by a narrow margin when taking out a Benchmark 64 event over 1300m at Seymour at the start of January.

The pick had to overcome a wide alley that day and, while she failed to score over 1600m at Flemington next time, she was beaten less than two-and-a-half-lengths that day.

The filly returned to form with a highly impressive victory by over three lengths in a 1600m Benchmark 70 contest at this track a month ago.

While the selection has yet to race over this distance, she won easily last time out and shaped as if the step up in distance she gets here would prove no issue.

Sensation for sprint success

The penultimate contest on the nine-race Moonee Valley card is the 1200m Summer Sprint Final, a Benchmark 78 handicap contest.

Midtown Boss will jump from an insider barrier under Mark Zahra and he has been in good form in recent months.

The son of Street Boss made his first start since a gelding operation when successful by two-and-a-half-lengths in a Benchmark 70 handicap at Flemington in January.

Racing down the straight over 1000m that day, the four-year-old has placed second over 1100m at Caulfield in Benchmark 84 handicap races on both subsequent starts.

While he rates highly in this field, ZOU SENSATION is the pick to upset the likely favourite, having won over this track and trip already this prep.

That victory came when the gelding delivered a victory by over half-a-length when contesting a Benchmark 70 event in December.

Trained by Leon & Troy Corstens, the selection has placed second in two of his three subsequent efforts including when narrowly beaten here on 23rd February.

The selection contested a course and distance Benchmark 78 event that day and is the pick to register his third career win.

Star to shine at Newcastle

The 1400m Group 3 Newcastle Stakes is the penultimate race on an eight-race card at Newcastle.

JIMMYSSTAR showed good form in his native New Zealand including when winning over 1300m at Hastings in September.

The selection went on to deliver victories in his first three starts since switching to the Ciaron Maher barn, including when successful at Caulfield last month.

The four-year-old came home over two lengths clear of his rivals in a Benchmark 84 handicap over 1400m that day and was stepped up to Listed company subsequently.

The son of Per Incanto jumped at short odds for that Listed contest held over 1400m at Flemington on 17th February but ultimately was beaten half-a-length into second.

The gelding had a wide barrier on that occasion but should find things easier jumping from next to the rail here and he is taken to provide Tyler Schiller with a winner.
