Australian Racing: Journalism cannot be written off

There’s five meetings set to take place on Wednesday including four metropolitan fixtures.

Race 2 Randwick Kensington

Journalism @ 11/5

Race 1 Doomben

Our Armistice @ 3/1

Race 4 Sandown Hillside

Pacific Ruby @ 7/1

Journalism for Randwick Kensington success

The second race on the Randwick Kensington card takes the eye with the 1550m Benchmark 72 contest having attracted a field of eight. Atlantic Ocean for the Chris Waller stable is a winner already this prep having delivered a one-and-a-half-length victory in a maiden at Warwick Farm in October.

That victory came in a 1400m contest on a soft 6 surface with the gelding racing behind the speed that day. He has shown some solid form since without winning including when fourth over 1400m at Benchmark 68 level at Warwick Farm on his latest outing.

James McDonald is a positive jockey booking here but preference is for main market rival Journalism. The four-year-old has performed well at metro level in the past finishing a good third over 1600m in a Benchmark 72 event at Randwick in June last year.

Returned this spell with a half-length triumph in a 1350m Benchmark 64 contest at Wyong last month. Followed that success up with a close second in a 1580m Benchmark 72 affair at Canterbury at the start of the month. Raced close to the speed on each occasion and is well drawn to employ similar tactics here with Brett Prebble up for the first time.

Armistice to break maiden

The opening contest at Doomben is an interesting 1050m maiden plate contest. A soft 5 surface is forecast with Tersane likely to have his supporters for the Barry Lockwood stable.

The five-year-old is lightly-raced for one his age but took a step forward when finishing runner-up in a 1000m maiden at Eagle Farm in June last year.

Racing first up that day he hasn’t been seen since that length-and-a-half defeat on a good 4 track. Forced to miss the next three months having bled that day he looks opposable in here with the filly Our Armistice the selection on this occasion.

The daughter of Shalaa has placed on each of her last three starts including when third twice last spell. The second of those third place efforts came in an 1100m maiden on a good 4 surface at Ipswich in August.

Returned to action with a good second place finish having been ridden from off the pace in a 1000m maiden at Sunshine Coast last month. Met with interference at the start that day but off a nice racing weight and with Brodie Loy retaining the ride she is selected to break her maiden.

Ruby to complete four-timer

Pacific Ruby shoulders top weight for the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace team in the fourth race at Sandown Hillside. The race in question is a 1300m Benchmark 70 contest with a good 4 track forecast.

The filly won twice on wet tracks in 2022 and showed that quicker going is no issue when justifying market support to deliver a victory in a Benchmark 64 event at Flemington last month. Racing first up in a 1200m contest that day the daughter of Kermadec finished strongly having been ridden from off the pace.

Jamie Kah’s mount has won over further in the past with the extra distance here no issue as she chasers a four-timer. The pick has a good barrier two off the rail here and looks capable of continuing her winning run.
