The Gilgandra Cup comes up as the penultimate race on an eight-race card.
Lyle Chandler is set to saddle Sonic Tycoon here, with his gelding expected to jump as favourite, having won each of his last two starts.
The seven-year-old impressed when putting daylight between himself and his rivals when a clear-cut winner of a 1600m Benchmark 66 handicap at Gunnedah just under a month ago.
The gelding went on to complete a double when taking out a 1609m Benchmark 62 handicap at Taree subsequently, with both of those efforts coming on a good 4 track.
Clayton Gallagher, on board at Gunnedah, will have to negotiate a wide barrier if he is to take out the feature and, with that in mind, JUST GO BANG is preferred in this event.
Trained by Nick Olive, the pick ended his last prep with a close-up third when contesting a 1600m handicap held on a heavy 8 track at Narrandera in July.
The 5.00 five-year-old showed up well in taking out two barrier trials prior to resuming in the Allbids Queanbeyan Regional Cup over 1600m at Queanbeyan in November.
The selection won by half-a-length when racing on a soft 5 track, with a double-figure barrier against him when finishing seventh in a competitive affair at Nowra last time out.
Kody Nestor rides for the first time here and he looks up to partnering the gelding to his eighth career win.
The penultimate race on the Albany card is the $125,000 Fitzpatrick Plate, a Benchmark 72+ handicap over 1230m.
A good 4 track is expected, with the consistent Cool Memory expected to have his supporters for the Darren McAuliffe stable.
The four-year-old showed good form at metro level last season, breaking through for a Listed win in the 2000m Aquanita Stakes at Belmont in July.
The gelding raced on a soft 5 surface on that occasion, having registered a number of placed efforts previously, including a third in the Listed Belmont Guineas over 1600m.
Both of those efforts came on wet tracks, with the son of Impending resuming with a solid third in a 1200m Benchmark 78+ handicap at Ascot last month.
Regular rider Joseph Azzopardi is again set to ride, however his mount’s best form has come over further and he is expected to find at least one too good.
The pick on this occasion is AVOIDANCE, who is taken to continue his good run of form by registering a victory on his first start of 2025.
The six-year-old has been in good form this season, winning first up in an 1100m Benchmark 70+ handicap at this track in November.
Steve Wolfe’s representative jumped at $26 when a good second when contesting a 1200m metro event at Ascot on his second start back.
While he was beaten over four lengths by the winner, it’s notable that the winner that day - Norich - went on to complete a hat-trick when winning at Ascot subsequently.
The sixth and eighth home that day have also won since, while the 7.00 pick went on to deliver a victory over 1000m at Pinjarra.
Shaun McGruddy knows the gelding well and, jumping from next to the rail, his mount is taken to register his fifth win in seven starts at this venue.
The fifth race at Mornington is a 1500m Benchmark 64 handicap restricted to fillies & mares.
A good 4 track is forecast, with top weight NURSERY CHIME the selection to register her fourth career win.
The six-year-old faces some promising younger rivals here, however she demonstrated good form in 2024 including when placing second in a string of metro events.
Those metro events came at Flemington, Sandown, Moonee Valley and Caulfield Heath, while she also placed third in the Bairnsdale Cup on her final start last prep.
While the 2.90 mare raced over between 1600m and 1800m in those races, she has won over this track and trip in the past and proved she is effective over shorter when resuming at Cranbourne.
Lloyd Kennewell & Lucy Yeoman’s representative placed third in a 1400m Benchmark 64 handicap first up this prep and looks capable of delivering a second-up success.
