Australian Racing: King Of Sparta eyeing Eagle Farm glory

There’s plenty of action to get involved with this Saturday including at Eagle Farm with two Group 1’s, a Group 2 and three Group 3’s at the Brisbane venue.

Race 7 Eagle Farm

Promises Kept @ 7.50

Race 8 Eagle Farm

King Of Sparta @ 9.00

Race 6 Eagle Farm

Cifrado @ 11.00

Kept for Derby glory

The first of Eagle Farm’s top level contests sees a field of 20 declared for the 2400m Queensland Derby. A soft 5 track is expected for the million dollar contest with Chris Waller’s Kovalica expected to start a short-priced favourite for the feature.

The gelding showed that he is one of the top three-year-old’s when winning the Group 2 Queensland Guineas on his penultimate outing.

The son of Ocean Park was asked to tackle older rivals subsequently when delivering a third place finish in the Group 1 Doomben Cup over 2000m at Doomben a week ago.

Kovalica raced from off the pace on a soft 5 surface at Doomben, and while he shaped as if this trip would be no issue, he is making his first start over this distance here.

PROMISES KEPT, a tactically versatile gelding from the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace stable. is selected to get the better of the favourite here.

The pick completed a double when registering a near three-and-a-half-length victory in the 2200m St Leger Trial at Bendigo at the start of April.

Freshened following that effort, he raced from the front prior to delivering a third place finish in the Group 1 South Australia Derby over 2500m at Morphettville. Unproven on soft going, the selection has the services of Mark Zahra here and is taken to upset the likely favourite.

Sparta for Cup triumph

The second of the two Group 1’s, the Kingsford-Smith Cup over 1300m has also attracted a big field with 19 declared for the contest.

A Group 1 winner in Europe A Case Of You has delivered decent efforts in her three starts since joining the Mick Price & Michael Kent Jr team.

Those starts included a fifth place finish in the Doomben 10,000 over 1200m at Doomben two weeks ago. Prior to that the five-year-old had finished less than two lengths behind the winner when sixth in the Group 2 Victory Stakes over 1200m at this track at the end of last month.

However, on this occasion Victory Stakes' second-placed finisher KING OF SPARTA is preferred for the Peter & Paul Snowden stable.

The four-year-old won a barrier trial over 1050m at Randwick prior to placing second in the Victory Stakes. The gelding has shown his best form in Queensland including when winning his first two starts this spell with both of those victories coming over 1200m.

The second of them came in the Queensland Magic Millions Spring on a good 4 track at Gold Coast back in January.

The son of I Am Invincible will have no issues with the slight step up in trip here, and with a good alley, two off the rail is taken to deliver a victory at the top level.

Cifrado for Sires’ Produce success

The Aquis Stallions Sires’ Produce, a Group 2 1400m event, is the sixth race on the Eagle Farm card. Cifrado takes the eye here having won two of his three starts since returning from a spell.

The first of those saw the colt break his maiden at the fourth attempt when delivering a near five length success over 1100m at Ipswich last month.

A Listed second dropped to 1000m at this venue followed, prior to a first Group race victory when upped to 1200m for the Group 2 Spirit Of Boom Classic at Doomben two weeks ago.

Damien Thornton’s mount finished strongly to score that day, shaping as if this step up in trip would suit, and with a good barrier draw in five he is selected to registering a third career success.
