Australian Racing: King Of Sparta set for Randwick charge

There’s Group 1 action at Flemington with the 2024 renewal of the 1000m Black Caviar Lightning Stakes among the races scheduled on a 10-race program.

Saturday also provides Group race action at Randwick, plus a number of other meetings for punters to get involved in.

Race 8 Flemington

I Am Unstoppable @ 7.50

Race 5 Randwick

King Of Sparta @ 2.80

Race 6 Morphettville

Global Turn @ 6.00

Unstoppable for Lightning glory

The feature race at Flemington, the previously mentioned Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes, sees New Zealand superstar Imperatriz bid to extend her winning run to five.

The mare has been off the track since finishing half-a-length clear of her 10 rivals when contesting the 1200m Darley Champions Sprint Stakes at this venue in November.

The drop back in distance is no issue here, having won the Group 1 Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley three starts back and she is expected to prove hard to beat with regular pilot Opie Bosson up.

The three-year-old I AM UNSTOPPABLE may prove capable of springing an upset however, having shown solid form at this venue in each of his last three starts.

The selection lost out by a narrow margin when contesting the Group 2 Danehill Stakes over 1100m on a soft 5 surface in October.

Trained by Lloyd Kennewell & Leon Yeomans, the youngster was spelled following a good second in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes over 1200m at this track in early November.

The son of I Am Invincible raced from off the pace that day and similar tactics are expected when dropped to this trip for the first time since winning at Morphettville Parks on debut in March last year.

Sparta for Randwick success

The Group 2 Expressway Stakes over 1200m is set to take place as the fifth race at Randwick.

A good 4 track is expected with Buenos Noches expected to jump as favourite having performed well at the highest level at Flemington in November.

The four-year-old finished half-a-length second in the Group 1 Champions Sprint on a good 4 track that day, having recorded a mid-division finish in The Everest here prior.

Trained by Matthew Smith, the colt prepped for this event with a third in a 1000m barrier trial here on 8th February but he looks opposable with KING OF SPARTA preferred.

The gelding had finished runner-up in two of his three starts this spell, prior to contesting a valuable 1200m contest at Gold Coast last month.

The selection delivered a two-length victory when jumping a short-priced favourite for that Gold Coast contest and top hoop James McDonald, on board that day, is again in the saddle here.

Also a son of I Am Invincible, King Of Sparta has performed well at Group 1 level in the past and the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained gelding looks capable of delivering his eighth career win.

Global for Morphettville victory

The sixth race at Morphettville is a 1400m Benchmark 64 handicap over 1400m.

The track is currently a good 4 with the once-raced Apache Discreet expected to start favourite.

The gelding made the perfect start to his racing career when saluting by three-and-a-half-lengths over 1200m in a Murray Bridge maiden on a soft 6 track last month.

Lachlan Neindorf is again in the saddle, however, his mount likes the experience of some of his rivals and fellow last start maiden winner GLOBAL TURN is the pick in this event.

The filly showed ability earlier this season, including when placing on her first two starts with the second of those seeing her finish third over 1300m at Seymour in November.

The three-year-old made her first start of 2024 a winning once when delivering an impressive victory by over five lengths when odds-on for a 1350m contest at Strathalbyn on 14th January.

The pick recorded a fourth in a 1000m barrier trial at this track earlier this month and looks capable of providing trainer Phillip Stokes with a winner.
