Australian Racing: Lady Of Camelot can ride to glory

There’s plenty of racing action on Saturday including three Group 1 contests headlined by the Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield.

Race 8 Caulfield

Lady Of Camelot @ 4.00

Race 9 Caulfield

Asfoora @ 6.50

Race 8 Rosehill

Encap @ 6.00

Lady to take Blue Diamond

The previously mentioned Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes for two-year-olds is set to take place over 1200m on a good 4 surface.

Matt Laurie’s Coleman was a $550,000 purchase at the Gold Coast Yearling Sale last year and he has impressed in his two starts to date.

The first of those saw him triumph by over a length in a 1000m Listed contest at this venue back in October, while he duly followed up over the same track and trip at the start of this month.

The son of Pierata justified favouritism in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes on that occasion and, while he looks a worthy favourite stepping up in distance, preference is for LADY OF CAMELOT.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott, the filly showed plenty of ability when winning a barrier trial at Randwick Kensington back in September.

The youngster made a highly promising debut when beaten just over half-a-length in the Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes over 1000m at Randwick.

The Written Tycoon filly was spelled following that effort and recorded victories in two barrier trials, prior to returning in a seven-runner renewal of the Group 3 Widden Stakes at Rosehill on 3rd February.

Stepping up to 1100m that day, the selection raced from the front, prior to delivering a near three-length victory in impressive fashion under Tim Clark.

An inside barrier here is a positive and, with the step up in distance expected to suit, she is taken to complete a double.

Asfoora for Plate success

The Oakleigh Plate over 1100m is the highlight for sprinters at Caulfield with a field of 15 declared for the Group 1 contest.

King’s Gambit is expected to prove popular racing off a low weight for the Peter & Paul Snowden team.

The gelding showed good form in 2023, including as a two-year-old when placing third in the Group 1 Golden Slipper over 1200m at Rosehill in March.

The colt has made just two appearances since that effort, including when winning the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes over the same course and distance in October.

The youngster gets in off a low weight with Jamie Kah up here and, while he looks to hold strong claims, ASFOORA is the selection in this event.

The five-year-old won twice over this distance earlier this season, including by three lengths in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes at this venue in October.

The pick came home three lengths clear of her seven rivals when racing from the front that day, having previously placed second in the Group 1 Moir Stakes over 1000m at Moonee Valley.

The Flying Artie mare arrives here on the back of a length second in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes over this track and trip when racing first up earlier this month.

Regular pilot Mitchell Aitken is again set to ride Henry Dwyer’s mare and the pair are taken to overcome a wide barrier to register their sixth win together.

Encap for Group 2 glory

Away from Caulfield the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes over 1400m is one of three Group 2 contests set to take place at Rosehill.

ENCAP is the selection here having demonstrated good form at Group 1 level when a close second over this distance in the Golden Rose at this venue in September.

Racing on a good surface that day, the pick looked a likely winner until overhauled late on and he is expected to have improved for his first up third at Randwick earlier this month.

Encap came home just over two lengths behind the winner when third in the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes over 1200m that day and the return to 1400m is also in his favour in this event.

Jason Collett, on board at Randwick, is again set to ride and he can steer the Capitalist gelding to his first Group race success.
