Australian Racing: Lady Tornado set to strike

There’s four meetings due to take place on Monday with Belmont Park’s provincial meeting supplemented by three country fixtures.

Race 9 Belmont Park

Lady Tornado @ 12/5

Race 6 Muswellbrook

Lightfast @ 11/2

Race 6 Bathurst

Whataboutscotty @ 4/1

Tornado for Belmont glory

The concluding race on the Belmont Park card is a competitive looking Class 1 handicap. The race is set to take place over 1200m with a soft 5 surface expected. Playthatfunkymusic is expected to jump as favourite for the Peter Fernie team.

The three-year-old won over 1100m on a good 4 track at Kalgoorlie last July and has been in good form in the main since. Returned from a break with a seventh over 1100m at Ascot last month and followed up by taking a step forward to go down by a narrow margin over 1000m here 11 days later.

Handles the soft ground but tackles this trip for the first time and Lady Tornado is taken to get the better of Paul Harvey’s mount.

The selection has been knocking on the door this spell finishing in the frame here on all five starts since a six length fifth over 1200m at Ascot in November. Showed good track and trip form when runner-up at this level on a good 4 surface three starts back.

Has since delivered two second place finishes at this level over 1300m on good 4 tracks here. Adam Durrant’s charge wasn’t beaten far over 1400m here when last in action on a soft track back in May last year and is selected to double her career tally.

Lightfast for Muswelbrook success

The Richard and Will Freedman training partnership are represented by Jumeirah Beach in the sixth race at Muswellbrook. The four-year-old gelding heads into the 1280m Benchmark 66 contest chasing a hat-trick with his latest victory coming in a 1400m Class 1 at Mudgee at the start of December.

Spelled since that effort he had previously impressed when scoring over this track and trip in a maiden a week earlier. Tackles similar underfoot conditions, a good 4 surface here but notably appeared to improve for his debut run first up last spell.

Handler Paul Messara does well at this venue boasting a 41% strike-rate (14/34) here in the last 12 months. He is represented by Lightfast who is seeking a second win this spell having scored by half-a-length in a 1200m Class 1 on a good 4 track at Tamworth last month.

Previously suffered a narrow defeat when runner-up at this level over course and distance in early January. Has shown good wet track form so any softening of the ground would be no issue and the Dundeel gelding is taken to defy a draw in barrier ten to record a third victory.

Scotty to complete hat-trick

While there’s just seven races on the Bathurst card the penultimate contest is a competitive looking Benchmark 58 event. With three scratchings a field of 13 are expected to go to post for the 1400m contest.

Billiethefillie is likely to prove popular with punters having drawn barrier six here. Brett Robb’s filly finished a close up fourth in a Benchmark 50 event over this trip on a good 4 surface at Tamworth on 28th January.

This looks a tougher contest however and it may prove best to look elsewhere for the winner. The hat-trick seeking Whataboutscotty takes the eye here with Karen McCarroll’s charge having shown promise with two sixth place finishes in her first spell last year.

Built on those with a promising third over 1000m in an Orange maiden on a soft 5 track at the end of December. The step up to this distance appeared to suit when the four-year-old delivered a victory in a maiden held on a good 4 track at Dubbo subsequently.

A Class 1 triumph on a soft 5 surface over 1300m here followed and with a good draw in five he looks capable of continuing the winning run.
