Australian Racing: Mazis can dominate and Doomben

There are a number of meetings scheduled to take place on Wednesday, including at Sandown, where they are due to race on the Lakeside course.

Race 6 Sandown

Jaykayann @ 6.00

Race 7 Doomben

Mazis @ 2.40

Race 5 Warwick Farm

Black Run @ 4.40

Jaykayann to salute at Sandown

A good 4 track is expected at Sandown, with the sixth race of the day a 2100m Benchmark 70 handicap event.

Hoops is expected to have her supporters, having registered good efforts in each of her last two starts.

The first of those saw the New Zealand-bred finish runner-up in an 1800m Benchmark 70 handicap at Flemington in April.

This mare went on to back that up with a good fourth in the 2017m Listed Centaurea Stakes, when crossing the border to race on the Parks track at Morphettville.

The five-year-old acquitted herself well, having jumped at $31 for that Listed contest and she should find this company more to her liking.

Fellow New Zealand-bred mare JAYKAYANN is the pick here however, having performed well in both starts this time around.

Both of those efforts have come at Cranbourne including when beaten just under two lengths in a 1600m Benchmark 70 handicap when racing first up.

The daughter of Tavistock backed that effort up with a good third-place finish when stepped up to 2080m for a similar contest last month.

While the forecast going is in the mare’s favour, any overnight rain would be no issue with Jaykayann having performed well on wet tracks in the past.

While Tom Prebble will have a wide barrier to negotiate here, his mount arrives here in good form and is taken to break through for her first win in over two years.

Mazis for Doomben glory

There are 10 races scheduled for Doomben, with the seventh race of the day a Class 1 & Maiden Plate expected to take place on a heavy 8 surface.

Lindsay Gough’s Vermilion Kirin is expected to feature prominently in the betting, having won over 2060m at this track on his penultimate start.

The son of Pariah came home over three lengths clear of his rivals when racing on a wet track that day.

This four-year-old went on to deliver a respectable fifth, beaten just under four-and-a-half-lengths in a 2169m Benchmark 68 handicap at Eagle Farm.

Regular rider Georgina Cartwright is set to ride and, while the pair hold obvious claims, preference is for MAZIS.

The three-year-old showed ability in his first prep racing and broke through for his first win when successful at Sunshine Coast just over a month ago.

Racing second up this prep, the gelding came home nearly two lengths clear of his rivals when racing on a soft surface.

The American Pharoah youngster was stepped up to Group 3 company for the Rough Habit Plate over 2000m at this venue subsequently.

Jumping at big odds, Mazis failed to shine on that occasion and he tackles a much easier looking contest here.

Ryan Maloney’s mount boasts a good barrier here and he is taken to double his career tally.

Run for Warwick Farm success

French-bred BLACK RUN takes the eye in the fifth race on the Warwick Farm card.

The race in question is a 2200m Benchmark 72 handicap expected to take place on a soft 7 track.

Black Run won twice when trained in the UK, including on a soft surface as a two-year-old in 2023.

The son of Nathaniel has shown up well in three starts since switching hemispheres, with his most recent effort a second over 2110m here last month.

This four-year-old lost out by less than a length when contesting a Benchmark 72 handicap held on a heavy surface that day.

The gelding is expected to appreciate the step up in distance he gets here and with Braith Nock, on board last time, again set to ride, Black Run is taken to record a win.
