Australian Racing: Never Give Up to shine on the coast

There’s a number of meetings for punters to get stuck into on Sunday including a competitive provincial card at Sunshine Coast and Cup day at Stawell.

Race 5 Sunshine Coast

Never Give Up @ 4.60

Race 4 Albany

Isola Bay @ 5.00

Race 8 Stawell

Mystery Island @ 4.80

Never Give Up to complete double

Four scratchings have left a field of 12 to go to post for the fifth at Sunshine Coast. The race in question is a 1200m Class 1 contest with a soft 6 surface forecast.

Bulikov for the Robert Heathcote stable is expected to jump as favourite racing first-up this time around. The son of Deep Field won a maiden over this trip on a good 4 track at Eagle Farm back in June last year.

Prior to that the three-year-old had debuted with a four-length third in a 1000m maiden event here ten days earlier.

Well drawn on the rail here the gelding has shown a liking for a wet surface in the past when runner-up in a 1400m Benchmark 65 event here in early December.

However Ben E Thompson’s mount improved for his return run last spell and with that in mind Never Give Up is preferred in this contest.

The pick debuted with an impressive victory in a course and distance maiden on a good 4 surface March 23. Racing close having jumped from barrier one that day the selection asserted to score by over one-and-three-quarter-lengths under jockey Kyle Wilson-Taylor.

Kyle Wilson-Taylor is again in the saddle here and while his mount tackles a wet track for the first time here he shapes as if he is up to completing a double on his first start against previous winners.

Bay to resume with Albany triumph

The fourth at Albany is an eye-catching Benchmark 70+ contest with a soft 6 surface expected for the 1230m event.

Sneaky Fox has shown a liking for this venue in the past winning five times from 12 starts here. Four of those victories have come this spell including when delivering a victory by a narrow margin in a Benchmark 58+ event over 1100m here at the end of last month.

The soft track here is no issue while similar comments apply to the step up to Benchmark 70+ level having placed second in this grade twice last month.

However she is expected to find Isola Bay too strong with the gelding boasting an impressive first-up record of two wins from three starts.

The sole defeat in those first-up outings came when third in a 1000m event at Belmont Park on debut in June 2021. The son of Cable Bay ended his last spell with two victories over shorter at Broome including when successful by a length in a Benchmark 70+ contest on a good 3 track in August.

The gelding has joined the Adam Durrant stable since that effort and looks capable of delivering a victory with Clint Johnston-Porter booked to ride.

Island to take Cup

The Stawell Cup, an 1850m handicap is set to see a field of ten go to post on a heavy 9 surface. Mystery Island is a previous course winner having delivered a victory over 2700m at this venue back in April 2021.

The gelding is a versatile type with regards distance having won over 1600m and twice over 2200m this time around. The son of Victoire Pisa’s latest victory came by a length in a Benchmark 66+ event over 2200m on a good 4 track at Ascot at the start of January.

The six-year-old followed that up with a respectable mid-division finish in the Group 2 Perth Cup over 2400m at the same venue.

Trained by Lindsey Smith the selection has finished in the first three on all three previous outings on heavy going and is taken to score following a seventh over 1600m at Sandown Hillside March 29.
