Australian Racing: Saltcoats to deliver Listed success

There are five meetings scheduled to take place on Monday, including at Doomben and Warwick Farm, where metro fixtures are set to take place.

Race 7 Warwick Farm

Saltcoats @ 3.50

Race 6 Doomben

Bandasha @ 6.00

Race 6 Pinjarra

Village Girl @ 6.00

McDonald mount set to shine

The most valuable race of the day is the 2400m Listed Australia Day Cup, which comes up as the seventh race on the Warwick Farm card.

A soft 5 track is expected for the race, with Bullets High expected to have his supporters as he seeks his third win this prep.

The gelding won first up over 1400m at this venue when contesting a Benchmark 72 handicap held on a soft 5 track in October.

The four-year-old has been racing over further since then, however, including when winning by a narrow margin in a 2100m Benchmark 88 handicap at Wyong earlier this month.

While Joe Pride’s representative holds obvious claims, preference is for Chris Waller’s top weight SALTCOATS, who has won two of his four starts this prep.

Both of those victories have come at Randwick, with the first of them seeing him get home by a length when contesting a Benchmark 88 handicap held on a good 4 track last month.

The 3.50 pick raced over 1800m that day and encountered similar underfoot conditions when stepped up to 2000m next time with the four-year-old winning by over a length.

While the selection was unable to complete a hat-trick at Rosehill in the Listed January Cup recently, he acquitted himself well on a soft 7 track that day.

Top hoop James McDonald is set to ride here and his mount looks up to returning to winning ways.

Bandasha can salute at Doomben

The sixth race at Doomben is a 1350m Class 4 handicap expected to take place on a soft 5 surface.

Tannenburg ended his last prep with a good third in a 1610m Benchmark 70 handicap held on a wet track here in August.

The gelding has failed to make much impact in two starts this time around, however, including when seventh over 1200m in a Class 3 set weights event at Eagle Farm first up.

The four-year-old raced from off the pace that day and was ridden from mid-division when occupying the same position stepped up to 1300m at Sunshine Coast subsequently.

While Andrew Mallyon’s mount is respected here, he will need to take a step forward if he is to challenge and Matthew Dunn’s BANDASHA is the pick.

The gelding recorded a win when taking a Class 2 set weights event at Ipswich on his return to action in January.

Two of the four-year-old’s three subsequent starts have seen him place, including when runner-up over 1400m at Eagle Farm on his next start.

The 6.00 selection was returning from a short break when placing third over 1400m in a Benchmark 68 handicap at Eagle Farm earlier this month.

All of the gelding’s efforts so far have come on a good 4 track, with the slightly softer going expected here unlikely to pose an issue.

Martin Harley, on board last time out and at Ipswich, is again set to ride, with his mount selected to register her first win of the year.

Village Girl looks good at Pinjarra

They are set to race on the Scarpside course at Pinjarra, with the penultimate race of the day a 1400m Class 5 handicap for fillies & mares.

Takahide Ikenushi is set to saddle VILLAGE GIRL and she looks capable of recording her second win in her last three starts.

The five-year-old came home a length clear of her rivals when contesting a 1200m Benchmark 46+ handicap at Bunbury at the end of last month.

The 6.00 pick went on to finish just over a length back in fourth when contesting a Class 5 handicap over the same distance at this venue earlier this month.

The extra distance here shouldn’t pose any issues, with the mare having performed well over 1400m in the past and she looks up to recording a win with apprentice Chanel Cooper set to ride.
