Australian Racing: Shadesofmidnight to shine

There’s three meetings set to take place on Monday with country fixtures at Scone, Coffs Harbour and Chinchilla.

Race 5 Coffs Harbour
Shadesofmidnight @ 7.00

Race 3 Scone
Riva Del Sol @ 4.60

Race 7 Scone
Casino Lord @ 6.00

Race 7 Chinchilla
Voulait @ 6.00

Midnight to break maiden

The fifth on the Coffs Harbour card is an intriguing 1215m maiden. A soft 5 surface is expected with Leopardi expected to jump a short priced favourite ahead of his racecourse debut.

Trained by Brett Cavanough the four-year-old is the winner of his only trial but may find his more experienced rivals have too much here with preferred for SHADESOFMIDNIGHT.

While the filly has made ten previous starts it’s only recently that she’s started to make a real impact at the business end of racing finishing in the places in each of her last three starts.

That run of placed efforts has coincided with a switch to wet tracks and she performed well when runner-up on a heavy 8 track over 1426m at Lismore last month.

That outing came on a heavy 8 track but the soft 5 here should be no issue having finished third over 1106m at Grafton on a soft 6 track prior. Ben Looker, on board for the picks first three starts this spell returns to the saddle and dropping back in distance can steer the daughter of Moshe to a first career success.

Riva for Scone success

The Sawyers Mining Services Handicap over 1000m is set to take place as the third race on the Scone card. While Rising has won three of his seven starts to date Brett Cavanough’s new recruit looks opposable on his first start since joining from the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace stable.

Preference here is for RIVA DEL SOL who is also making his first start since switching stables. The pick competed with credit in metro contests last spell including when winning a Benchmark 72 contest over 1100m on a heavy 10 track at Rosehill at the start of July.

The daughter of Press Statement resumed with a fair ninth in a 12 runner Benchmark 72 contest over this distance at Warwick Farm in January.

Freshened since that effort she gets a drop to country level here and having won second up in the past looks capable of providing jockey Christian Reith with a victory.

Lord to score in Scone feature

The Class 5 Newhaven Park Country Championships over 1400m provides the feature at Scone.

Top weight CASINO LORD qualified for this contest with a third place finish when beaten just over half-a-length in a Class 5 over this trip at Tamworth last month.

That effort came on a good 4 track but the soft surface expected here should prove no issue having won on a soft 5 track at Quirindi on his penultimate outing.

While the gelding has competed mainly over 1000m this spell, including when successful at Tamworth in October he is unexposed and open to improvement at this distance.

The son of Casino Prince raced is versatile tactics wise but often races from off the pace as was the cast last time out and he is taken to provide jockey Koby Jennings with a winner.

Voulait for Chinchilla glory

The Michael Hemmings-trained VOULAIT boasts a strong first up record having won four of his six previous first up starts. The eight-year-old won twice last spell and while he suffered a defeat first up over this course and distance in May he did finish a close second.

The son of Wanted likes to race from the front and while a wide barrier isn’t ideal he performed well in stronger contests in 2022. The gelding has Paul Hamblin, on board for each of his last two victories in the saddle here and looks up to defying top weight to salute here.
