Australian Racing: Sushi Express to speed home at Launceston

There are nine meetings scheduled to take place on a busy day of racing on Sunday, including at Launceston, where a soft 5 track is expected.

They also race at Alice Springs, Benalla, Bunbury, Mount Gambler, Murwillumbah, Sale, Sapphire Coast and Sunshine Coast.

Race 8 Launceston

Sushi Express @ 6.50

Race 7 Sapphire Coast

Associate @ 8.00

Race 9 Bunbury

Glasgow Lass @ 2.80

Side with Sushi for Sydeston Cup

The penultimate race on Launceston’s nine-race card is the 2100m Sydeston Cup, an open handicap event set to take place on a soft 5 surface.

Sigrid Carr saddles Swoop There It Is, with her representative set to jump from next to the rail having registered two good placed efforts so far in 2025.

The second of those saw the mare lose out by half-a-length when placing second in a 2100m Benchmark 68 handicap at this venue.

Troy Baker, on board that day, is again set to ride and his mount rates highly as she seeks her first victory in over a year.

Preference on this occasion is for SUSHI EXPRESS, however, with the gelding having recorded top three finishes in all four starts this prep.

The pick finished third on the forecast soft 5 going when placed here on his first two starts this time around, including in a 1420m Benchmark 74 handicap first up.

The 6.50 seven-year-old broke through for his first victory of the season when delivering a comfortable two-and-a-half-length victory in a 1600m Benchmark 68 handicap here on his penultimate start.

Racing on a good 4 surface that day, the gelding raced from the front that day and backed it up with a close third in the 1880m Devonport Cup on the synthetic track last month.

Regular rider Hayle McCarthy is again set to ride and, having gone well over this distance in the past, her mount is taken to record her seventh career win.

Associate to shine at Sapphire Coast

Sapphire Coast’s seventh race is the Showcase Cup, an open handicap set to take place over 1600m on a good 4 track.

Nick Olive’s Moritz Girl arrives here in good form, having registered a victory over 1600m in a Class 3 handicap at Randwick on her penultimate start.

The four-year-old went on to place second in a 1550m Benchmark 72 handicap on the Kensington course at the same venue subsequently.

Alysha Collett’s mount has underfoot conditions to suit and holds obvious claims in this field.

However, Danielle Seib saddled an across the card double at Rosehill and at this venue on Saturday and her ASSOCIATE is the pick here.

The five-year-old showed good form in Cup contests at Nowra and Wagga Riverside in December, including when runner-up in the Ted Ryder Cup at the second named venue.

That Ted Ryder Cup second came over 1675m on a good 3 surface on Christmas Eve and he went on to deliver a solid effort when three-lengths eighth at Randwick subsequently.

The 8.00 selection was beaten three lengths in a Class 3 handicap at Randwick, with a change of tactics to racing closer to the speed possibly not suiting that day.

The gelding was lame the following day following that Randwick effort, but he is taken to return to winning ways with Pierre Boudvillain set to ride.

Lass to take Listed honours

The penultimate race on Bunbury’s ten-race card is the Listed WA Breeders’ Classic, a 1200m race expected to take place on a good 4 track.

Mitchell Pateman’s GLASGOW LASS showed up well in her barrier trials prior to making a winning debut in the 1100m Magic Millions Plate at Ascot in January last year.

The filly came home two lengths clear of her rivals when contesting a 12-runner event held on a good 4 track that day.

While the daughter of Alabama Express has made just one subsequent start, that did result in a win with the filly scoring by a length in the 1200m Quayclean Plate at Belmont in August.

The 2.80 selection raced on a soft 7 track at Belmont and returning from a spell she looks capable of completing a hat-trick.
