Australian Racing: Tom Kitten to show his claws

The richest two-year-old race in the world, the Golden Slipper is the feature race on a Rosehill card which features no fewer than five Group 1 races.

There is also Group 1 action from Melbourne with Moonee Valley set to host the 2024 running of the William Reid Stakes.

Switzerland for Slipper success

The 1200m Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes is set to take place as the eighth race on a 10-race card at Rosehill.

A field of 17 have been declared for the race with the unbeaten Storm Boy expected to jump a short priced favourite.

The colt, purchased for $460,000 as a yearling at the Gold Coast last year, has registered Group race victories in two of his four starts to date.

The most recent of those saw him salute at odds of $1.18 in the Group 2 Skyline Stakes over this trip at Randwick earlier this month.

The son of Justify is trained by Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott, however, preference on this occasion is for fellow unbeaten colt SWITZERLAND.

Trained by Chris Waller, the son of Snitzel has won all three starts to date, including by nearly three lengths over 1000m at Randwick when debuting in January.

The colt completed a double when racing on a soft 5 track in an 1100m contest there the following month.

The selection returned to a sound surface to deliver his first Group race success in the Group 2 UNSW Todman Stakes over this trip back at Randwick on 9th March.

James McDonald’s mount has a good barrier and racing in the colours of last year’s winner Shinzo, he is taken to maintain his unbeaten record.

Kitten for Guineas glory

Earlier on the Rosehill card the sixth race of the day is the 2000m Group 1 Rosehill Guineas for three-year-old’s.

Chris Waller looks to hold strong claims here thanks to Riff Rocket, the winner of five of his nine starts to date.

Those starts included a success in the 1400m Group 3 C S Hayes Stakes at Flemington when racing first up this prep.

While the gelding could finish only third in the 1600m Group 1 Howden Guineas at Flemington subsequently, he has placed over this distance in the past.

TOM KITTEN is the selection here with Hugh Bowman set to ride for trainer James Cummings.

The colt impressed when winning by over three-and-a-half-lengths in Randwick’s Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes in October.

The pick has failed to score in three starts this prep, however, it’s of note that they have all come over shorter and he acquitted himself well at Group 1 level on 9th March.

That Group 1 effort saw him deliver a fourth-place finish when beaten a length in the Randwick Guineas over 1600m at Randwick.

The son of Harry Angel kept on well having been ridden with restraint on that occasion and he is taken to return to winning ways in this event.

Queman to spring William Reid surprise

The feature at Moonee Valley is the penultimate race of the day, the Group 1 William Reid Stakes over 1200m.

All eyes will be on Imperatriz as she bids to avenge her defeat at the hands of Cylinder in the Newmarket Handicap earlier this month.

The mare meets the youngster on much more favourable terms here, however it is QUEMAN who takes the eye having shown good form so far this season.

The five-year-old is the winner of four of his last five starts including in the Listed W.J. Adamas Stakes over 1000m at Caulfield in January.

The gelding followed up with a narrow victory having raced close to the pace in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate over 1100m at the same venue last month.

The selection faded over this distance when racing on a soft 6 track at Morphettville three starts back, however he looks worth another try at this trip.

Trained by Shane & Cassie Oxlade the gelding has a good barrier here and may prove up to continuing his good run of form to upset some better fancied rivals.
