Australian Racing: Veteran Eaton could prove too strong

There’s two metro meetings set to take place with Moonee Valley and Canterbury both due to race. In addition there are a further five meetings with Ballina’s meeting called off due to heavy rain.

Race 6 Moonee Valley

Eaton @ 8/1

Race 5 Canterbury

Jayanthi @ 13/5

Race 3 Rockhampton

Highground @ 7/5

Eaton to record victory at The Valley

The sixth at Moonee Valley is a competitive looking Benchmark 70 contest. The stayers are to the fore here with the race set to take place over 3000m on a soft 5 track. Sunday Buzz has shown solid form of late and appeared to appreciate the extra distance when upped in trip to deliver a track and trip success here earlier this month.

Wet track no issue for Oceanic Flash

With that in mind the five-year-old is expected to have his supporters jumping from barrier seven following that two length victory. Jamie Kah, on board that day is again in the saddle here but the partnership may find veteran performer Eaton too strong down in grade.

The selection impressed with a five-and-a-half-length win over this track and trip when racing at this level back in December. Thomas Stockdale’s mount hasn’t been the most consistent sort since however he did deliver a five length triumph over 2500m in a Benchmark 100 contest here on January 28.

That effort came with similar underfoot conditions to those forecast here and he can be forgiven a poor run over 2500m on a good 3 surface here a week ago. Backs up quickly and is taken to deliver a fourth win at this venue.

Jayanthi for Canterbury glory

A heavy 8 track is forecast for Canterbury with the fifth race of the day an interesting 1250m Benchmark 72 event. Chris Waller’s Pungo is expected to jump as favourite having shown he handles the forecast heavy going when making all in a 1400m maiden at Warwick Farm on his penultimate start.

Delivered a respectable fifth place finish in the Group 3 Network 10 Carbine Club Stakes over 1600m at Flemington on a soft 7 when last in action on October 29. Spelled since that effort Jayanthi is selected to get the better of James McDonald’s mount.

The four-year-old filly is the sole runner on the card for the powerful Ciaron Maher and David Eustace training team. The team boast an impressive 37% strike-rate (11/30) at this track in the last 12 months with their contender having placed second on both previous starts on heavy going.

Dylan Gibbons’ mount has won in Benchmark 72 company in the past scoring by half-a-length over 1100m at Warwick Farm earlier this month. The extra distance here is no issue and the Hinchinbrook filly is selected to deliver career win number three.

Highground to score for Walsh

The third at Rockhampton is a seven runner 1200m Class 2 contest. A good 4 surface is forecast for the race with likely favourite Thisland Is Myland saluting by five-and-a-half-lengths at this venue in a Restricted 58 contest over 1050m last month.

Impressed when racing from off the pace that day but Highground looks a tough nut to crack following some good runs here in recent times. Nick Walsh’s gelding found only the progressive Kick On Command too good when runner-up at this level over course and distance on his penultimate start.

Followed that up with a good second in a Benchmark 58 event over 1300m on a wet track here 17 days later. Had to overcome a wide barrier that day and was unable to dominate. Should have no such issues with an inside alley here and Ryan Wiggins looks capable of making all on the Cluster gelding.
