Australian Racing: Wee Ripper to strike at Narrogin

There are four meetings scheduled for Monday with Grafton, Yarra Glen and Longreach’s country fixtures supplementing provincial racing from Narrogin.

Race 7 Narrogin

Wee Ripper @ 4.20

Race 8 Grafton

Shotgun Bobby @ 5.00

Race 3 Yarra Valley

Futuristic @ 1.85

Ripper for Cup glory

The Narrogin Cup, due off as the seventh race on an eight race card is the most valuable contest at Narrogin. A field of 14 are set to go to post for the 1900m Benchmark 72+ contest with a heavy 8 track expected.

Few in this field have a confirmed liking for a heavy track with Awesome Chatter expected to have his supporters for the Adam Durrant stable. The four-year-old has been racing on good going this spell including when runner-up over 1800m at Ascot on his penultimate start.

Revolutionary Miss to take the double

The son of Awesome Rock backs up quickly here following a seventh of eight in a 1600m Benchmark 66+ event at the same venue on Saturday.

While the gelding has won on soft going in the past, preference is for top weight Wee Ripper who has demonstrated good form in recent times. The veteran performer has finished in the first two in four of his five starts including when runner-up in a Class 5 event over 1600m at Pinjarra 8th March.

Duly went one better when tackling an 1800m event at Ascot ten days later with that effort marking his first victory since October 2021. The selection has performed well on soft going in the past and with a good barrier in four is taken to deliver win number seventh.

Bobby to double up

The concluding race on the Grafton card is a 1620m Benchmark 58 event. A soft 7 track is expected with Twosret one of three horses vying for favouritism.

Trained by Samantha McGuren the four-year-old filly was tried at up to 2400m in her last spell but has demonstrated decent form sprinting this time around.

Off the mark when winning by a narrow margin over 1200m in a maiden contest here when racing first up early last month she placed second in a Class 1 subsequently. That latest effort came in a 1315m event at Coffs Harbour and the American Pharoah filly should have no issues stepping up to this 1620m trip.

Shotgun Bobby will jump from the inside barrier here and is the selection here however. The son of Shooting To Win delivered a near one-and-a-half-length victory when tackling a Benchmark 58 event held on a heavy 8 track over 1706m here last time out.

The drop back in trip appeared to suit that day having previously finished sixth over 2200m here at the end of January. Jockey Cejay Graham gets on well with the pick and they look up to delivering a victory here.

Futuristic to break maiden

The third at Yarra Valley is an interesting 1200m maiden contest with Futuristic expected to prove hard to beat for the Mick Price & Michael Kent Jr team.

The three-year-old showed a liking for wet tracks in his first spell including when runner-up over 1100m on a heavy 9 surface at Bendigo when debuting in October.

The pick has been absent since finishing a disappointing fifth in a 1200m maiden on a soft 5 surface at Seymour the following month.

The son of Zoustar has been gelded since that Seymour effort and coming here fresh and returning to a forecast heavy surface he is taken to provide jockey Craig Newitt with a winner.
