Ninja Star @ 5.50

Serebenco for Newcastle victory

A field of 15 are set to go to post for the previously mentioned Class 5 event at Newcastle. The race, set to take place over 1400m is set to take place on a good 4 track with Acquitted expected to have his supporters for the Kris Lees stable.

The six-year-old import registered a victory on his second Australian start when taking a Benchmark 85 event over this trip on a heavy 8 surface at Eagle Farm last May. Failed to score in three starts last spell however but did manage a third in a Class 5 over 1500m at Kembla Grange in November.

Ledecky’s Dream Valley return

Sent off favourite on that occasion he comes here fresh having been spelled following that effort. Barrier nine isn’t ideal here however and while he handles good going his best Australian efforts have come on wet tracks. Sebrenco looks nicely weighted ahead of this contest and with a good alley in two is preferred for this contest.

The pick won at Benchmark 64 level over this trip on a heavy 8 track in October last year and performed well in two subsequent efforts that spell. The four-year-old filly returned to action with a third of six, beaten just over one-and-a-half-lengths in a Benchmark 72 event over 1200m on a soft 6 surface at Canterbury last month.

The daughter of Sebring is expected to take a step forward racing second up and looks up to scoring back up to 1400m.

Tiffany to double up

Ex Sport Girl is expected to jump at short odds for the finale on Albany’s seven race card. The race concerned is an 1100m Class 2 handicap with a good 4 surface expected.

Trained by Steve Wolfe the filly broke her maiden by a length in a 1240m contest on a soft 5 track at this venue in early November. The daughter of A Lot subsequently delivered a good fifth when beaten just over three lengths in the 1600m Group 3 Euroz Hartleys – WA Champion at Ascot eight days later.

Shaun McGruddy, on board at Ascot takes the ride once more and while she gets a drop in grade here the progressive Queen Tiffany is preferred. Trained by the in form Adam Durrant the selection is improving with racing finishing runner-up over 1200m at Geraldton on her penultimate outing.

That effort came on a good 3 track and she duly went one better when dropped back to this distance in similar conditions at the same venue subsequently.

The form of that Geraldton victory is working out well with the fourth home winning subsequently and the third and fifth both placing second. With further improvement expected Queen Tiffany looks capable of making all the running here.

Star to break maiden

Our final selection comes up in the fourth race at Goulburn. The scratching of Ostwind has left a field of 16 for the maiden contest set to take place over 1600m. The selection here is the Matthew Smith-trained Ninja Star who has shown good form placing twice from three starts this spell.

The four-year-old filly shaped as if this step up to 1600m would prove no issue when placing second in a 1400m maiden at Newcastle on February 25. While that effort came on a good 4 track the slightly softer going here shouldn’t prove too much of an issue having placed on a soft 6 surface in the past.

The pick has also placed third twice in small field contests on ground described as heavy. Ninja Star has a good alley in barrier six and dropped to country racing looks capable of registering her first victory.
