Australian Racing: Winside to shine on the Coast

There's seven meetings for punters to get stuck into on Sunday including provincial action from Sunshine Coast and Pinjarra.

Race 3 Sunshine Coast

Winside @ 2.5

Race 8 Pinjarra

Halatorion @ 3.4

Race 7 Ballarat

Threeandfourpence @ 4.60

Winside for Sunshine Coast triumph

The defection of Mort Doyle leaves a field of seven to go to post for the third at Sunshine Coast. The race in question is a 1000m handicap with a soft 6 track forecast.

Top weight Tavisan is one of two last start winners in the field and is expected to have his supporters following a win on synthetics at Gold Coast.

Piece Of Turf to extend winning run

Easy to back in the market having drifted from $1.80 to $2.15 he made all the running to salute in a 1050m contest. May struggle to get to the front here with pace inside him in the shape of Ovidius and it can pay to look elsewhere for the winner.

The Damien Batters-trained Winside is a seven time winner from 22 starts and is the pick in this contest. The five-year-old mare drops down from metro racing here following a seventh over 1200m in a Benchmark 85 event at Eagle Farm at the start of October.

Prior to that the selection had been beaten one-and-a-half-lengths in an 1100m event on a soft 5 track at Doomben. Jockey Nikita Beriman knows this track well and with her mount being unbeaten with three wins from as many starts first up she is taken to resume with a victory.

Halatorion to score at Pinjarra

The feature race on the Pinjarra card is the eighth race, the $150,000 Pinjarra Classic over 1300m. Sniparoochy is vying for favouritism with Halatorion having delivered two wins from four starts this spell.

The four-year-old fillies sole disappointing effort came when tackling Group 1 company in the 1200m Winterbottom Stakes on a good 4 track at Ascot in November. The daughter of Snippetson was narrowly beaten when a head second in a 120m contest at the same venue earlier this month.

The Stephen Miller-trained filly has a wide barrier to contend with here however and with a good alley Halatorion is preferred. Jockey William Pike has won on his last three starts on the gelding including by a narrow margin in a Benchmark 66+ event over 1200m at Ascot on February 5.

Performed well when beaten a length into third when trying to make all over 1200m at Ascot subsequently. Had Sniparoochy in front of him that day but looks capable of reversing that form with a good barrier four off the rail.

Trained by Roy Rogers the gelding has won at this venue in the past and with the ground to suit is selected to record his sixth career win.

Three for Ballarat success

The most valuable race on the Ballarat card is the Cvlx Miners Rest Community Cup, a Benchmark 70 event over 1600m.

Jockey Luke Nolen boasts a 24% (4/17) strike-rate at this venue in the last 12 months and his mount Threeandfourpence is the selection here. The pick wasn't beaten far in finish seventh over 1600m at Moonee Valley on his first two starts this spell.

Both of those efforts came at Benchmark 70 level on good 3 surfaces with the gelding subsequently placing second at Sandown Hillside.

That Sandown Hillside contest was a Benchmark 78 event on a soft 6 track with the selection finishing strongly under Jamie Kah. The War Front gelding has a good alley in two here and is selected to deliver a victory on his first start at this venue.
