T20 World Cup: Bangladesh team profile

Bangladesh have pulled off some historic victories in recent years, but they are yet to put a strong run together at the T20 World Cup 2022 and will be looking to put that right this time around.

A disappointing campaign in the 2021 edition saw them knocked out before they had even played their final group game, so an improved performance will be the aim this year.

Bangladesh have typically been perennial underdogs in international cricket, but in recent years have started to upset the odds and get the better of some of the bigger names, with wins over Australia and New Zealand in recent months.

They will be hoping to transfer some of that form into a consistent performance in a T20 World Cup, something they have failed to achieve in the six tournaments they have competed at. They are 66/1 to win the tournament outright.

They do have some stellar talent in their line-up, including captain and star man Shakib Al Hasan, who is considered one of the greatest all-rounders in the history of white ball cricket, as well as T20I Team of the Year member Mustafizur Rahman.

What is Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup record?

Bangladesh have failed to have a major impact at the T20 World Cup, winning just seven of their 33 matches across the six tournaments they have participated in and never making it to the knockout stages.

Their best performance statistically came in India in 2016 where they finished with two wins, a no result and four losses from their seven matches.

In 2021, Bangladesh picked up victories against Oman and Papua New Guinea but registered defeats against Scotland, Sri Lanka, England, West Indies, South Africa and Australia, meaning they were knocked out of the tournament before they even played their final match.

Who is in Bangladesh's group?

Bangladesh's group for this year's World Cup sees them take on India, Pakistan, South Africa and two as of yet unknown qualifiers.

The eight teams looking to come through the qualifiers are as follows: Namibia, Scotland, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Ireland, Netherlands, United Arab Emirates and Zimbabwe.

Bangladesh's campaign begins with a match-up on 24th October against one of these qualifiers in Hobart before facing South Africa in Sydney. The last match of the group stage is due to take place on 6th November against Pakistan.

Who is Bangladesh's coach?

Russell Domingo has been Bangladesh's head coach since August 2019, producing a number of big results under his stewardship.

During his reign Bangladesh have beaten India, Australia and New Zealand in T20Is for the first time. To add to those firsts, Domingo's men picked up a 4-1 T20I series victory over Australia in August 2021.

Bangladesh also recorded a historic first ever Test victory over New Zealand earlier this year before picking up their first ever series victory in Domingo's native South African soil in March.

Who is Bangladesh's captain?

Shakib Al Hasan is considered the greatest Bangladeshi cricketer of all time and one of the best all-rounders in the world.

He is ranked as the number one all-rounder in ICC ODI and T20I rankings and was named most valuable player at the 2019 World Cup.

He has had various spells as Bangladesh's captain and took the role back in August of this year, in preparation for this tournament.

Who is Bangladesh's potential matchwinner?

It's hard to look past Shakib Al Hasan as Bangladesh's matchwinner as he holds the record for most T20I wickets and for the most wickets in T20 World Cups, 41.

To add to that, the 36-year-old has also made over 2,000 runs in T20I cricket, showing his value to the team with both bat and ball.

With the ball, Mustafizur Rahman is a bowler who relies upon deception and is considered to have one of the best slower ball deliveries in the world. He was named in the T20I Men's Team of the Year last year. In 2019 he became the quickest fast bowler in history to reach 50 T20 wickets.

Who could be Bangladesh's breakout star?

Shoriful Islam burst on to the scene in Bangladesh's 2020 Under-19 World Cup win, taking nine wickets.

At just 21 years old, the pace bowler remains a raw prospect but will be hoping to have a breakout T20 World Cup, after making his debut for his national team in the format in March 2021.

How far can Bangladesh go at the T20 World Cup 2022?

After winning just seven of their 33 previous T20 World Cup matches, Bangladesh will be desperate to put together a more solid run this time around and they have certainly produced some strong performances in the last 12 months, including victories over New Zealand and South Africa.

Their chances of reaching the knockout stages will largely depend on their ability to be more consistent and reproduce those strong performances on a regular basis.
