Aussie Rules: Battle of the birds at the MCG

Collingwood will be out to return to winning ways when they take on top-eight hopefuls Adelaide at the MCG on Sunday.

The Pies slipped to a rare defeat against Melbourne in their last game, but have had some time to rest, recover and regroup following last week’s bye.

Now they need to bounce back, but it will not be easy against an Adelaide side who are pushing to play finals and will be desperate to cause an upset.

That game is the first of a Sunday AFL double-header, with Gold Coast Suns and Hawthorn also going head-to-head later on in the day.

Gold Coast are another side pushing for the eight, while the Hawks are looking for just their fifth win of the season, but are currently bang in form.

Collingwood have lost just the two games so far this season, the latest being a narrow four-point defeat against Melbourne.

Now all eyes will be on the Pies to see how they respond after the defeat and a week off, but they will be delighted to be in front of their own support at the MCG.

The last two games between these two sides have been very close, so Collingwood will be expecting another tough one on Sunday.

They have already met this season when Collingwood won by just one point back in April, while the Pies also won by five in July 2022.

If it is to be very tight once again, then Collingwood are priced at 6.00 to win by 1-12 points, while Adelaide can be backed at 6.50.

The Crows are on a run of win one, lose one, and it is their form away from Adelaide that is letting them down. They have won just one game outside of Adelaide this season and that was against Hawthorn back in April.

They do have key forward Taylor Walker however and if he is firing there could be a chance of an upset. Walker has 38 goals for the season and is priced at 1.13 to score at anytime during the game.

Gold Coast have made big improvements on last season and after winning six from seven in 2023, are in the mix to grab a finals spot.

However, they will need to find some consistency if they are to achieve that goal. It all depends on what Gold Coast side pitches up. The one that can beat the Crows and Bulldogs, or the one that loses to Carlton.

Four of their six wins have been at home, including the one against Adelaide and Western Bulldogs.

On the previous two occasions these sides met on the Gold Coast, the Suns ran out convincing 67 and 37-point winners.

Gold Coast can be backed at 6.00 to win by 37-48 points on Sunday, or 13.00 to win by 61-72.

Hawthorn have started to click in recent weeks when winning three of the last four games and could fancy their chances of another.

They should be full of confidence after beating Brisbane by 25 points last week, while they also toppled St Kilda by 10 points on their own patch.

The only defeat in that spell came against ladder-leaders Port Adelaide.
