Australian Racing: Battle to be won at Queanbeyan

There are just two meetings set to take place on Monday, with Queanbeyan and Ballina set to race.

Race 5 Queanbeyan

Battle Abbey @ 6.00

Race 3 Ballina

Goomeri @ 4.00

Race 7 Ballina

Hardly Grey @ 6.50

Abbey to score at Queanbeyan

The fifth race on the Queanbeyan card is an interesting Benchmark 58 handicap set to take place over 1200m on a heavy 10 surface.

Benjamin Smith has his string in good form at present, with five winners from 19 runners in the last 30 days, and his mare She’s Jessie is expected to have her supporters.

The five-year-old came home fifth in a 1007m Class 1 handicap held on a soft 5 track at Taree when racing first up at the end of October.

However, she took a step forward stepping up to this distance when losing out narrowly in finishing runner-up in a 1200m Benchmark 45 handicap at Canberra November 25th.

The mare has shown she handles heavy surfaces in the past and warrants respect in this field.

The four-year-old BATTLE ABBEY is preferred on this occasion, however, having won or placed in all five previous outings on heavy surfaces.

The colt triumphed by a narrow margin when taking out a 1000m handicap when racing at Benchmark 66 level here three starts back.

While the 6.00 pick has yet to win over this distance he showed a liking for this venue on that occasion and was a winner on a heavy 8 surface over 1000m at Goulburn back in May.

The son of Hallowed Crown wasn’t at his best when seventh, beaten three-and-a-half-lengths in an 1180m Class 3 handicap at Gundagai November 17th, but looks up to saluting back on a heavy track.

Goomeri goes for victory

The third race on the Ballina card is a 1250m Benchmark 66 handicap event.

A soft 6 track is expected with a field of nine due to head to post, including hat-trick seeking Tectonic Plate.

Trained by Daniel Bowen the filly broke her maiden over 1210m on a good 3 track at Lismore in October.

The four-year-old raced close to the speed that day, but showed that she is versatile with regard to tactics when coming from mid-division to deliver a victory over this track and trip subsequently.

That track and trip success came by one-and-a-half-lengths in a Benchmark 58 handicap event restricted to female horses.

The filly steps up in grade here and GOOMERI is taken to get the better of her stepping up in distance as well.

Trained by Matthew Dunn, the gelding has been racing in metro contests so far this spell, including when third over 1000m in a Restricted 65 handicap at Eagle Farm in October.

The 4.00 pick was racing first up that day and had an excuse given he returned lame when finishing last of nine over 1200m in a Benchmark 68 handicap at Doomben subsequently.

In-form hoop Brodie Loy takes the ride here and, with the soft 6 underfoot conditions forecast no issue, his mount is taken to return to winning ways when dropping back to country level racing.

Grey set for finale glory

The finale at Ballina is a Benchmark 58 handicap due to take place over 1400m and HARDLEY GREY takes the eye in this event.

The five-year-old has shown good form in recent starts, including when completing a double in registering a success in a 1300m Benchmark 58 handicap at Casino on October 28th.

The 6.50 selection was victorious on a soft 5 track that day and was again racing on a wet track when runner-up over 1250m in a Benchmark 58 handicap on a soft 5 surface here last month.

Jockey Noriyuki Masuda, on board for each of those efforts, is again in the saddle and he is taken to steer the son of Instinction to victory.
