Australian Racing: Bella Nipotina aims for big prize at Doomben

The Group 1 Doomben 10,000 takes centre stage on Saturday on a day with plenty of racing action for punters to get stuck into.

There is also racing at Belmont, Carnarvon, Echuca, Flemington, Gold Coast, Kembla Grange, Morphettville, Scone, Tennant Crook, Toowoomba and Trentham.

Bella to take 10,000 victory

The previously mentioned Doomben 10,000 over 1200m is set to take place as the eighth race of the day at the Queensland venue.

A heavy 8 track is expected, with I Wish I Win set to start a short-priced favourite for the Peter Moody & Katherine Coleman team.

The five-year-old won at this level on a heavy 9 track when contesting the 1200m T J Smith Stakes at Randwick in April last year.

The gelding has made just three starts since then and was resuming from a spell when third in this year’s renewal of the T J Smith early last month.

James McDonald takes the ride here and, while his mount looks to hold strong claims from an inside alley, BELLA NIPOTINA is the selection here.

The mare finished one place ahead of I Wish I Win when the pair clashed in the previously mentioned T J Smith at Randwick last month.

She was racing on a heavy track for the first time since taking the 2022 Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley that day and should appreciate underfoot conditions.

The 5.50 pick had the benefit of fitness on her side having previously registered three good efforts in top level sprints this prep.

Those efforts included a fourth in the William Reid over 1200m at Moonee Valley in March.

Ciaron Maher’s filly followed that effort up with a fourth, beaten just under one-and-a-half-lengths in The Kia Quokka over 1200m at Ascot two weeks later.

Craig Williams’ mount has an inside barrier here and she looks capable of returning to winning ways.

Cloudy to salute in Andrew Ramsden

The $500,000 Andrew Ramsden over 2800m is the most valuable race on Flemington’s 10-race card.

Their eighth race of the day is expected to see The Map jump as favourite under Damian Lane following some good efforts in Adelaide this prep.

Those Adelaide efforts include a narrow defeat when runner-up in the 3200m Group 2 Adelaide Cup in March at Morphettville.

The mare duly made amends for that defeat when successful dropping to 2500m for the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, a Group 3 event over 2500m back at Morphettville on 4th May.

MOSTLY CLOUDY is the pick here, however, having placed on his first two starts this prep prior to a good effort when sixth in the Group 1 Sydney Cup at Randwick.

While the gelding was beaten over five lengths into sixth in that Randwick event, it did mark his first attempt at the 3200m distance since switching hemispheres.

The five-year-old had demonstrated good form in staying handicap races when trained in the UK, including when completing a five-timer over 3200m at Ascot in July 2022.

The 7.00 selection was beaten just over half-a-length when third in the Listed Roy Higgins over 2600m at this venue on his penultimate start.

Luke Currie’s mount handles the forecast soft 5 track and jumping from barrier three he looks capable of registering a win.

Zouna to sound out Boom win

The Spirit Of Boom Classic, a Group 2 event, is the chief supporting race at Doomben, with a field of 12 declared for the 1200m two-year-old contest.

ZOUNA takes the eye here despite losing his unbeaten record when finishing only third in the Listed Dalrello Stakes over 1000m at Eagle Farm earlier this month.

The colt encountered trouble in the race having hit the rail and become unbalanced and he is expected to prove to be better than he showed that day.

The youngster had been freshened prior to that effort, having won both starts in March including in an 1110m maiden held on a soft 5 track here.

The 6.00 selection came home two-and-a-half-lengths clear of his rivals that day and duly followed up dropping to 1000m for an Eagle Farm Handicap later that month.

Adin Thompson, on board for all three previous efforts, is again set to ride and he can partner Lawrite Mayfield-Smith’s representative to victory when stepping up in distance.
