Big Bash League: Sydney Thunder v Brisbane Heat

The Big Bash League finals get underway on Friday night with the ‘elimination’ match between the Sydney Thunder and Brisbane Heat.

The regular season is done and dusted and now there are no second chances for these two sides. Lose you are done for the season, win and you go through to the ‘knock-out’ clash against the Melbourne Renegades, who finished third.

The stakes could not be higher and the pressure is on. There is not much to separate the two sides and it could come down to who can handle the occasion the better. Let’s take a closer look at the two sides as game day fast approaches.

What:Sydney Thunder v Brisbane Heat
Where:Spotless Stadium, Sydney
When:19:15 (AEST) Friday 27th January, 2023
How to watch:Channel 7, Foxtel Go, Kayo Sport
Odds:Thunder 17/20, Heat 97/100

Thunder hit and miss

The Thunder have been inconsistent throughout the campaign when winning seven and losing seven of their 14 games and they are priced at 16/1 to go on and win BBL12. They had a purple patch in the middle of the campaign when they won four on the bounce but since then have been hit and miss.

The men in green needed a three-wicket win over the Melbourne Stars in the very last game of the regular season to book their place in finals and they can take plenty of heart from that performance.

Brisbane bang in form

Despite finishing fifth, the Brisbane Heat are one of the form teams of the competition after winning four of the last five games. The only defeat came on Tuesday when they slipped a two-run loss in a thrilling showdown with the Hobart Hurricanes.

Hurricanes v Sixers preview

All on the line for Renegades and Strikers

The Heat is on for Hurricanes

Two of the wins were narrow ones over the Melbourne Stars but they have shown they can get the job done when the pressure is on at the death. Momentum is massive at this stage of the campaign and the Heat certainly have plenty of it.

The Heat are priced at 18/1 to go on and win the BBL12 title.

Doggett out for Thunder

The Thunder have been forced into one change for the clash against the Brisbane Heat as Brendan Doggett will miss the rest of the BBL campaign with an elbow injury. Ryan Hadley, who is a right-arm fast bowler, has been called up as a Local Replacement Player.

Thunder squad: Ben Cutting, Joel Davies, Oliver Davies, Matthew Gilkes, Chris Green (c), Ryan Hadley, Baxter Holt, Nathan McAndrew, Blake Nikitaras, Ross Pawson, Usman Qadir, Alex Ross, Daniel Sams, Gurinder Sandhu, Jason Sangha, David Warner, Sam Whiteman.

Same again for Heat

The Heat has yet to officially announce their squad for the clash but they are likely to stick with the side that suffered the two-run loss against Hobart Hurricanes on Tuesday.

That means Usman Khawaja will be up against the side he left to join the Heat ahead of BBL12, and he will be joined in the side by fellow Australian Test ace Marnus Labuschagne.

Heat (probable): Usman Khawaja, Josh Brown, Marnus Labuschagne, Matt Renshaw, Sam Hain, Jimmy Peirson, Michael Neser, James Bazley, Matthew Kuhnemann, Spencer Johnson.

Players to watch

David Warner (Sydney) Warner can be devastating when he is in good touch and is 11/4 to be the Thunder’s top batsman on the night. Not been in the best form of late and 26 is his biggest knock in the last five games, but it could be a case of cometh the hour cometh the man.

Usman Qadir (Sydney) The Pakistan spinner is priced at 11/4 to be the Thunder’s top bowler. He impressed with 3-24 in the narrow win over the Melbourne Stars that sealed their place in the top five.

Jimmy Peirson (Brisbane) Peirson has been in good touch throughout the tournament and was the Heat’s top batsmen once again in the loss to the Hurricanes. He chipped in with 39 runs and is priced at 9/1 to be their leading run scorer against the Thunder.

Michael Neser (Brisbane) The right-arm medium fast bowler impressed when taking 4-35 against the Hurricanes and has taken 12 wickets in the last five matches. Has a huge role to play against the Thunder and is priced at 21/10 to be their top bowler.
