It was originally a Principal Race before being handed Group 2 Status in 1980. Then it became a Group 1 race in 1987 and has remained that way since.

The Black Caviar Lightning is the first leg of a three-leg sprint series, which also includes the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate and Group 1 Newmarket Handicap.

The 2023 edition of the Black Caviar Lightning was won by Coolangatta for trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, with jockey Jamie Kah on board.

Black Caviar, who the race is named after, won it on three occasions, while Mahogany is among the horses to have won it on two occasions - in 1995 and 1997.

Nature Strip and In Her Time have also won the Black Caviar Lightning.
