Aussie Rules: Bombers face tough test in the west

Essendon will look to consolidate their place in the top eight when they travel to take on Fremantle on Saturday, while Sydney also entertain West Coast Eagles.

There are just the two games on Saturday but there is plenty at stake for all four sides as the 2023 AFL season rapidly ticks by.

Saturday’s games focus on the sides lower down the ladder, with a place in finals the top target.

Essendon are the highest-placed side in action, sitting in sixth, and while a place in the top four is still possible, Brad Scott’s side would no doubt take a place in the eight.

Fremantle need a win to keep in touch, while Sydney Swans are in need of a huge turnaround if they are to make it.

As for the Eagles, they would just love to win a game, something they have done on just one occasion so far this season.

Must-win for Swans

Sydney made the grand final last season, but in 2023 it is going to take a huge turnaround to even play finals.

The drubbing against Geelong in the grand final has clearly had a lasting effect and the Swans find themselves down in 15th spot on the ladder and eight points away from finals.

It looked as though they had turned a corner with back-to-back wins over North Melbourne and Carlton, but defeats against St Kilda and Brisbane Lions followed to stop them in their tracks.

Nothing other than a convincing will do against a West Coast side that are having another season to forget.

Last season the Swans beat the Eagles by 63 points at Optus Stadium and by 92 at the SCG the year before. Something similar will be the order of the day and they are priced at 3.40 to win by 73 points or over.

If West Coast are searching for signs of hope, they can possibly take heart from the fact that Sydney have lost four games at home this season.

But it does not look great for the Eagles who have conceded over 100 points in all but three of their 13 games so far. If they are to cause an upset, it will be tight and they are 19.00 to win by 1-12 points.

Dockers must stop the rot

Not for the first time this season, the wheels have come off at Fremantle.

Following a poor start to the season they bounced back with four wins on the bounce, including a victory over Melbourne at the MCG.

That was the last game before the bye and they have returned a different side, losing by 70 points against GWS last week. The game before they lost at home to Richmond.

The Dockers have at least been handed a big double boost heading into the game with star ruckman Sean Darcy set to return from a hamstring injury.

Goal-getter Michael Frederick also returns from an ankle injury.

Essendon are on fire after winning their last four games on the bounce to take them to within one win of the top four.

They were also at Optus Stadium on 27th May when they beat the Eagles by 50 points. It is expected to be a closer contest on Saturday and the Bombers are priced at 5.50 to win by 1-12 points.

There is also mixed news on the injury front for Essendon as Darcy Parish is set to return from a five-week lay-off, but ruckman Sam Draper looks set to miss out.
