Aussie Rules: Bombers to pile more pressure on Blues

Essendon will be out to cement their place in the top eight when they take on a Carlton side that look set to miss out on finals once again.

Week 13 of the AFL stretches into Monday with the big King’s birthday game between Melbourne and Collingwood, but there is also plenty to look forward to on Sunday.

It is North Melbourne and Greater Western Sydney that get the action underway in the early game, with both sides desperate for a win to claw away from the foot of the ladder.

Then it is the turn of Carlton and Essendon in front of a big crowd at the MCG. The Bombers are going well, but the same cannot be said of the Blues, with coach Michael Voss under pressure.

North Melbourne and GWS have just one win between them in the last 10 games, and that went the way of the Giants with a shock win over Geelong.

The Kangaroos have won just two games all season and currently sit at the foot of the ladder. However, there have been some signs of improvement in recent weeks. They lost by just five points to Essendon last week, while Sydney Swans beat them by just three points.

Sandwiched in between was a 35-point loss to ladder-leaders Collingwood, which is nothing to be embarrassed about. North could be in with a great shout of edging their third win and are priced at 6.00 to win by 1-12 points.

GWS have shown what they are capable of by winning on the road at Geelong, while they also won at Sydney Swans, but need to show more of it.

They did win by 49 points in this fixture last season, but it was the Roos that won the two before that.

Carlton eyeing response

Carlton have won the last three meetings between the two sides and how they could do with another one as they continue to struggle in 2023.

The Blues have now lost the last five games on the bounce and unless there is a big turnaround, will miss out on finals footy once again.

Carlton are not getting flogged every week, but it is wins that matter, and they only have four all season. Booting goals has been an issue for them despite the fact that Charlie Curnow is averaging just above three a game at the moment. Curnow is priced at 6.00 to boot the first on Sunday.

Essendon on the other hand have rediscovered the form that had some suggesting they could challenge for the flag in 2023.

The Bombers have won the last three games on the bounce to jump to sixth place on the ladder and within one win of the top four.

Essendon are also handed a big boost with the news that Peter Wight is set to make his return to action against Carlton.

Wright was the leading goal-kicker for the Bombers last season but has not played in 2023 because of a shoulder issue. If he does figure, Wright is priced at 1.14 to score at Anytime.
