NRL: Brisbane Broncos profile

Brisbane Broncos have returned to the top of the NRL and will be looking to win their first premiership since 2006 when they take on Penrith Panthers in the grand final.

The Broncos have been the most successful club of the NRL era with their six premiership wins, but they had a rough few years, slumping to the foot of the ladder.

However under the leadership of coach Kevin Walters, they have turned things around and are now just one game away from returning to the very top.

Brisbane have shown this season they have the quality players and the game to do it, now they just need to rise to the occasion in Sydney.

Let’s take a closer look at the Broncos heading into the grand final.

Route to the grand final

The Broncos missed out on finals altogether in 2022 so their rise up the ladder in 2023 is a remarkable one.

Along with the Panthers they have been one of the top two teams in the competition all year and deserve their place in the grand final.

They slipped up on the last day of the regular season, which allowed Penrith to claim the minor premiership, but have bounced back well in finals.

Brisbane smashed Melbourne Storm 26-0 in the first finals game, and were then too good for the Warriors in the preliminary final, winning it 42-12.

The Broncos will not be able to run over Penrith with such ease, but they can be backed at 6.50 to win by 1-5 points.

Play-off history

The Broncos have been the most successful club in Australian rugby league with their six premiership wins.

Three of them have been in the NRL era but their last one did come way back in 2006.

Brisbane also finished runner-up in 2015 when losing 17-16 to North Queensland Cowboys in one of the best, if not the best, NRL grand finals.

Key players for the Broncos

Just like the Panthers, Brisbane are blessed with quality all over the pitch, but the addition of Reece Walsh this season has been the difference.

The fullback has been a revelation since arriving from the Warriors and will be key to Brisbane’s chances of finishing the job off.

This grand final is lucky to have two outstanding fullbacks on the pitch and Walsh or Dylan Edwards to score a try can be backed at 2.50.

Playmaker Adam Reynolds has been just as influential. Many pundits and former players believe that the Broncos cannot win the comp without him.

Thankfully for Brisbane he has recovered from injury and will be ready to take his place in the side.

Winger Selwyn Cobbo will be a huge threat and is priced at 2.35 to grab a try at anytime in the game.

The Broncos forwards will also be crucial when they come up against a strong Panthers pack. Pat Carrigan, Payne Haas and Kurt Capewell will be the players to watch.
