A-League: Brisbane Roar v Sydney FC preview

Sydney FC will be out to bounce back from an opening week defeat in the A-League when they take on Brisbane Roar at Suncorp on Friday night.

The Sky Blues got off to a bad start as they suffered a 2-0 home defeat against Melbourne Victory and they can ill afford another on Friday.

Sydney FC are 8.00 to win the grand final in 2023/24 and it is crucial they begin the season strongly.

Brisbane can take plenty of heart from their 1-1 draw away at Macarthur FC in Week 1 and will be keen to back it up with three points.

It may only be week two, put there is already plenty at stake for both sides. Let’s take a closer look at the match-up heading into the game.

Roar look to build on promising start

Brisbane can be delighted with the point they picked up in a 1-1 draw at Macarthur FC and should take plenty of confidence from that result.

Roar came from behind to earn a point, courtesy of a stunning free-kick scored by Jay O’Shea in the 73rd minute.

However they can feel themselves unlucky that they didn't take all three points, as they also struck the woodwork three times during the game.

New head coach Ross Aloisi was delighted with the way his side approached the game and he will be demanding more of the same against Sydney.

Roar will be boosted by the return of Thomas Waddingham from international duty and the young striker can be backed at 2.87 to score at anytime.

O’Shea will be looking to strike from a set-piece once again and is available at 4.00 to score at anytime.

Brisbane proved they were difficult to break down at the weekend and we could be in for a tight game on Friday night.

With that in mind, under 2.5 goals is priced at 2.10.

Sydney need to find a response

Sydney FC were poor to say the least in a 2-0 defeat against the Victory last weekend and will need to be much better against Brisbane.

It was the defensive performance that would have alarmed coach Steve Corica the most. Poor defending gifted Victory their first goal, while the second also came too easily.

Sydney have won the last two games against the Roar, including this same fixture in April this year when they left with a 2-0 win.

Sydney FC can be backed at 12.00 to win by the same score on Friday night, but there can be no repeat of the sloppy defending that was on show against Victory.

New Brazilian striker Fabio Gomes was disappointing on his A-League debut and was brought off in the second half.

He will be determined to put on a better show in Brisbane and can be backed at 2.40 to score at anytime in the game.

Former Nottingham Forest midfielder Joe Lolley looked a bigger threat from long range and is available at 3.10 to score at anytime.
