AFL: Bulldogs in need of SCG boost

Western Bulldogs will be battling to hold on to a spot in the top eight when they travel to the SCG to take on Sydney in the opening game of week 18.

There are just six games of the regular AFL season remaining and the race to make the top eight is a tight one.

The Bulldogs have work to do, but at least they are still right in the mix. The same cannot be said of Sydney, who are now facing a minor miracle to get there.

One thing is certain, nothing other than a victory against the Bulldogs will do if they are to keep their slim hopes alive.

Week 18 looks set to be a thrilling one and the Swans and Bulldogs will get us underway on Thursday night.

Swans finals hopes on the line

Sydney have managed just the one win in their last five games to leave themselves two wins away from the top eight with the games fast running out.

After smashing West Coast Eagles 205-34, the Swans would have been hoping to kick on. However, they were held to a 54-54 draw against Geelong in the next game and suffered a defeat to Richmond at the weekend.

There has not been much in their defeats. Richmond won by just 13 points, high-flying Brisbane beat them by 16 and St Kilda 14.

Sydney can be backed at 6.00 to beat Western Bulldogs by 1-12 points but at this stage of the season any kind of win will do for the Swans.

Their form at the SCG has not been the greatest this season, and this is one of the main reasons they find themselves in the position they are in.

St Kilda, Fremantle and Port Adelaide have all left with the points this season and the Bulldogs will be out to do the same.

The Swans have won two of their last three games against the Bulldogs and in this same fixture in 2022 they won by 53 points.

Bulldogs hanging on to final spot

The Bulldogs are hanging on to a place in the top eight by the skin of their teeth and are in need of a big result at the SCG.

Luke Beveridge’s side bounced back from defeats against Port Adelaide and Geelong to beat North Melbourne and Fremantle.

The wins cemented their place in finals, only to slip up against Collingwood on Friday night.

They can take heart from a brave performance against a Pies side that have only lost two games all season and sit at the top of the ladder.

There was only 12 points in it and the Bulldogs should not be too downbeat.

The Bulldogs' run-in to the end of the regular season looks to be a relatively kind one, with Essendon the only team that is above them.

However they do play Geelong and GWS, who are chasing hard from behind. With that in mind, a win over the Swans is a must.

The Bulldogs have won nine games this season and five of those have been away from home, so they are more than capable of getting the job done.

Aaron Naughton will continue to be a threat against the Swans. The key forward is averaging two goals a game and is priced at 11.00 to boot the first of the match.

Skipper Marcus Bontempelli is also starring in midfield when averaging 26.9 disposals a game. He can be backed at 1.28 to produce 25+ against the Swans.
