Big Bash: Can Melbourne Stars end their title drought?

The Big Bash League gets underway in December and the Melbourne Stars will be attempting to win the tournament for the first time in their history.

Since the tournament’s inception back in 2011/12, the Stars have yet to go on and win the grand final, which is a big surprise considering they have had some talented players pull on the green jersey during that time.

On two occasions, in 2013/14 and 2019/20, they did finish top of the ladder at the end of the regular season, but failed to get the job done in finals.

The Stars have finished runner-up on three occasions and have made the semi-finals in five of the 12 BBL seasons to date.

It is by no means as poor record, but they have yet to win the Grand Final and, for a franchise like the Stars, that is not acceptable.

Now the question is being asked can they go on and win it in 2023/24?

Stars failing to shine

While the Melbourne Stars were regulars in finals in the early years of the Big Bash League, their form in recent campaigns has been disappointing to say the least.

In the 2022/23 campaign they finished rock-bottom of the BBL ladder, winning just three games out of 14 and picking up just six points.

It is going to take a massive turnaround for the Stars to go from bottom to top and then go on and get the job done in finals.

It has been a worrying trend over the last few seasons. In 2021/22 they finished sixth and the season before seventh.

This after they finished top of the pile in 2019/20, but lost the grand final to the Sydney Sixers.

Rivals continue to look strong

It goes without saying that the Stars will be up against some strong competition in 2023/24 and only time will tell how they measure up.

Perth Scorchers have dominated the BBL in winning the grand final in the last two seasons and will be very strong once again in the campaign ahead.

The Sixers won the two grand finals before that and are sure to be in the mix once again, while Brisbane Heat will be out to go one step further after making last season’s grand final.

But it is the Scorchers who will be the team to beat once again and the Stars may not be at that level just yet.

Stars roster appears stronger

The Stars have some quality in their side already with the likes of captain Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis in the ranks, but they will need even more.

However, the Stars' recruitment team look to be doing all they can to ensure they have a roster capable of challenging for the title.

The roster is not complete just yet, but there have been some big additions already, in particular that of Australia Test fast bowler Scott Boland.

Left arm paceman Joel Paris is another good addition, along with the arrival of experienced wicketkeeper Sam Harper.

Harper had a very impressive 2022/23 campaign when scoring 264 run for the Melbourne Renegades.

Part of that deal, however, has seen leg-spinner Adam Zampa move in the opposite direction and he will be a big loss for the Stars.

The Stars will also be looking to strengthen further and their chances of winning the Big Bash League could hinge on the next few months.
