Australian Racing: Caulfield runner won't go down Without A Fight

There’s plenty of Group race action on Caulfield Cup Day on Saturday, along with the $1,000,000 Five Diamonds Prelude at Randwick, there’s a Group 3 at Ascot among the races for punters to get stuck into.

Fight to take Cup

The feature Group 1 Caulfield Cup comes up as the penultimate race at Caulfield’s 10-race card, with the 2400m having attracted a truly international field with runners from Europe and Japan.

The ex-French galloper Gold Trip registered a second when narrowly beaten in this race last year and went on to succeed in the Melbourne Cup two starts later.

While out of form earlier this year, he returned with a bang in overcoming a slow start to deliver his second top level success, when taking out the Turnbull Stakes over 2000m two weeks ago.

Ciaron Maher & David Eustace’s inmate is expected to prove popular with punters, however preference is for WITHOUT A FIGHT.

Trained by Anthony & Sam Freedman, the gelding showed good form when trained in Europe, including when placed in a Listed event at Newmarket in September last year.

The seven-year-old failed to shine when down the field in the Melbourne Cup at Flemington on his Australian debut in November.

However, the gelding showed improved form when shipped to Brisbane winning in both Group 3 and Group 2 company at Eagle Farm earlier this year.

The second of those victories came in The Q22 over 2200m in June, while the son of Teofilo caught the eye when sixth over an inadequate 1800m in the Underwood here just under a month ago.

Inhibitions for Prelude success

Earlier on the Caulfield card the three-year-old fillies are in action in the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude over 1400m.

Coeur Volante has won two of her three starts to date and is expected to have supporters on her first attempt at this distance.

Michael Moroney’s filly ended her first spell racing with a victory in a 1300m handicap at Sandown Hillside and she returned with her first Group race win in the Scarborough Stakes over 1200m.

That Group 3 Scarborough Stakes triumph came on a good 3 track at Moonee Valley but a wide barrier is far from ideal here.

James Cummings saddles the experienced INHIBITIONS who has an inside alley here having suffered a narrow defeat when beaten in the previously mentioned Scarborough Stakes.

The daughter of Zoustar has run well over this distance in the past, including when narrowly beaten in the Group 3 T L Baillieu at Rosehill in March.

Any softening of the ground from the current good 4 would be no issue for the pick, who is a tough individual and is expected to track the speed.

James McDonald takes the ride for the first time here and his mount looks up to registering her first Group race victory.

Cotehele to triumph at Randwick

The $1,000,000 Five Diamonds Prelude over 1500m comes up as the eighth race at Randwick and COTEHELE is expected to prove hard to beat.

The five-year-old delivered a victory over this trip in a Benchmark 88 handicap at Rosehill in May and has delivered good efforts in stakes company in his two most recent starts.

The second of those saw the gelding suffer a narrow defeat when runner-up in the 1400m Alan Brown Stakes on a good 4 track at Rosehill.

Trained by John O’Shea, the pick finished well on that occasion, shaping as if a step back up in distance would suit.

Tom Sherry’s mount has a good barrier four off the rail here and looks capable of delivering his biggest win to date.
