The Champions Sprint is a Group 1 thoroughbred horse race which takes place at Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne, each November.

The Champions Sprint is for horses aged three years old and above and is raced under weight-for-age conditions.

The Champions Sprint is part of the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival that takes place in the first week of November each year.

The Champions Sprint will take place on the final day of the Carnival, which will be Saturday 9th November 2024.

The exact start time of the Champions Sprint has yet to be revealed, but in 2023 it was Race 6 on a bumper card and is likely to remain the same in 2024.

The Champions Sprint is raced at the iconic Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria.

As it is a race for the sprinters, the Champions Sprint goes down the famous Flemington straight.

Champions Sprint prize money

The amount of prize money on offer for the Champions Sprint was increased to $3million from 2022, making it the third richest sprint race on the Australian calendar.

The winner of the race will take home a cool $1,800,000, second $540,000 and third $270,000.

The top eight in the Champions Sprint all earn prize money, with sixth, seventh and eighth all taking home $60,000 for their efforts.

Champions Sprint history

The Champions Sprint has a long and proud history and was first raced in 1960.

Back then it was known as the Craven ‘A’ Stakes and was won by a horse named Karina.

It was also a Principal Race before being upgraded to Group 1 in 1979 and has remained that way ever since.

Champions Sprint past winners

Imperatriz was the winner of the 2023 Champions Sprint for trainer Mark Walker and jockey Opie Bosson.

There have been plenty of famous winners of the Champions Sprint, but the most famous of all has to be Black Caviar.

Unbeaten in 25 career starts, Black Caviar won the Champions Sprint in both 2010 and 2011.

Nature Strip is another memorable winner, taking the honours in 2019 and 2021, while Redzel won the race in 2017.

Bella Nipotina is priced at 4.50 to win the 2024 Champions Sprint, just ahead of Giga Kick and Overpass, who can be backed at 5.00.

Estriella and Sunshine In Paris are both priced at 9.00.
