What is the Champions Stakes?

The Champions Stakes, registered as the LKS Mackinnon Stakes, is a Victoria Racing Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race that takes place on the Melbourne Cup Carnival’s last day.

The weight-for-age feature is raced over 2000m at the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne.

When is the Champions Stakes?

The Champions Stakes is part of the Melbourne Cup Carnival and will be raced on Saturday 11th November this year.

Now raced on Champion Stake Day, the Champions Stakes is one of the headline races on the card.

It was originally raced on Victoria Derby day but was switched to the final day in 2016.

How old is the Champions Stakes?

The Champions Stakes has a long and rich history going back to the first race in 1869 when it was known as the Melbourne Stakes up until 1936.

The very first winner back in 1869 was Glencoe, while Wakeful won the race three consecutive times between 1901 and 1903.

Most recently Annabel Neasham-trained Zaaki has won the last two Champions Stakes in 2021 and 2022.

What is the prize money for the Champions Stakes?

The total prize fund for the Champions Sprint is $3million, with the winner taking home $1,800,000.

Second place will land $540,000, with third taking $270,000. The rest of the pot will be paid out to the remaining runners who finish in the top eight.

Who are the hot fancies to win the Champions Stakes?

West Wind Blows is the current favourite ahead of this year’s Champions Stakes at 3.25 to claim the victory.
