Australian Football: Coach keen to leave Wellington Phoenix on a high

Wellington Phoenix take on Brisbane Roar on Sunday having announced that head coach Ufuk Talay will step down at the end of the A-League season.

Talay has been the most successful coach in the history of the club, but his contract is up at the end of the campaign and he has decided not to renew.

The coach will now be looking to go out on a high and there is a bit of work to do for the Phoenix to make finals, starting against Brisbane Roar on Sunday.

Elsewhere there is a huge game between Sydney FC and Perth Glory, with the visitors looking to jump above the hosts and into the top six.

Then in the final game on Sunday, Adelaide United will be out consolidate second spot on the ladder by beating Western United.

Wellington Phoenix say they will announce who their new coach will be next week, but for now all focus is on them picking up a crucial three points against Brisbane Roar.

Going into the game Wellington sit in fifth spot on the ladder, but only a couple of points separate them from seventh, so there is work to do.

They are in poor form after losing the last three on the bounce and need to stop the rot quickly. A home win against Roar is a must.

Roar are also in the mix to make the six and this will be seen by them as a must-win game. They have won two out of the last three games and will be on a high after beating Newcastle Jets 3-0 last week.

Brisbane have no fresh injuries or suspensions and are likely to stick with the same side that hammered the Jets. Stefan Scepovic scored in that game and can be backed at 3.10 to score anytime on Sunday.

Joshua Laws drops out of the Phoenix squad through suspension, while Ben Old remains on the injury list.

The clash between Sydney FC and Perth Glory does not get much bigger with just three games of the regular season remaining.

Sydney are clinging on to sixth spot by their fingernails and need a strong finish to secure a finals spot. After missing out last year, not playing finals will be unthinkable for the harbour city side.

Glory are one of the sides in with a chance of stealing a spot off them and they can jump into the six with a win. Problem is their away form is poor and they need to address that.

The men from the west did fight out a 0-0 draw away at Melbourne Victory last week, but at this stage of the season three points are the order of the day.

Sydney will be without the injured Diego Caballo, while Glory will be missing influential defender Mark Beevers.

It could turn out to be a cagey affair on Sunday and, with that in mind, under 2.5 goals in the game can be backed at 2.20.

Results over the Easter weekend pretty much ended Adelaide United’s minor premiership hopes, with Melbourne City now looking untouchable for top spot.

However, the Reds are on course to finish second, which is very important heading into finals, and they will want to keep their impressive unbeaten run and momentum going.

Western United are one of a number of clubs who still have a chance of making finals, but nothing other than a shock win will do with the games fast running out.

Western bring back a couple of key players for the game, as James Troisi has recovered from injury and Aleksandar Prijovic is back available following illness.

Isaias and George Blackwood are back in for the Reds, while Craig Goodwin has 11 goals to his name this season and can be backed at 2.30 to score anytime against Western.
