Aussie Rules: Collingwood out to regain top spot

Sunday looks set to be an exciting day of action in the AFL, with Collingwood, Port Adelaide and St Kilda all looking to keep the pressure on at the top of the ladder.

Brisbane joined Collingwood at the top of the pile by seeing off Carlton on Friday night, but the Pies will have the chance to go clear again when they face Sydney.

It could not be much tighter at the top and both St Kilda and Port Adelaide remain right in the mix.

St Kilda slipped to defeat against Port last week and need to respond when they tackle North Melbourne in the familiar surroundings of Marvel Stadium.

Port will be looking to make it five wins on the bounce when they entertain top-eight hopefuls Essendon at the Adelaide Oval.

Port Adelaide are a team in form at the moment after winning their last four games on the bounce and will fancy their chances of making it five.

The Power are strong at the Adelaide Oval, losing just once this season in the derby clash with the Crows.

Since then they have defeated Sydney, Western Bulldogs, West Coast and most impressive, St Kilda away last weekend. All of a sudden Ken Hinkley’s men are looking genuine flag contenders.

So too were Essendon until two defeats on the bounce to Collingwood and Geelong saw them slip down the ladder.

The Bombers have shown they can pull off the big results this season when defeating Melbourne and could do it again.

That win was actually at the Adelaide Oval in the Gather Round, and that could help to inspire Brad Scott’s side to another significant result.

Collingwood are shaping up as the team to beat this season as they continue to go from strength-to-strength.

The Pies have lost just the one game this season. That came away at Brisbane and there is no shame in that and another win on Sunday and they will move four points clear at the top of the ladder.

They have won the last three games, when edging out fellow contenders Essendon, St Kilda and Adelaide, and remain undefeated on home soil.

Collingwood have shown they can find a way to get the job done when it is close, something the Swans could not demonstrate last week.

They slipped to a one-point defeat against GWS to make it two defeats on the spin. The week before they were hammered by Geelong and confidence could be low.

Collingwood are also boosted by the returns of Scott Pendlebury and Mason Cox from eye and spleen issues respectively.

North Melbourne started the season with two wins, only to then lose the next five games on the spin.

Confidence will also be rock-bottom after they suffered a 90-point defeat against Melbourne in the derby game last week and it will take all the skills of master coach Alastair Clarkson to pick them back up.

He has also swung the axe in dropping five players in the wake of that heavy loss.

St Kilda will also be itching to bounce back after they suffered just their second defeat of the season against Port Adelaide last week.

The Saints are still in a strong position, but cannot afford to slip up here. The fact the game is at Marvel, their usual home ground, will help.

Saints have brought in Cooper Sharman to replace Zaine Cordy.
