AFL: Collingwood profile

Collingwood will be out to break their premiership drought in the AFL grand final on Saturday. but they have the Brisbane Lions standing in their way.

The Pies have been the stand-out side in the AFL in 2023, winning the minor premiership with ease, but it will all count for nothing unless they get the job done in the big one.

Collingwood have a long and proud history, but have not won a grand final since 2010, and need to put that right at the weekend.

Let’s take a closer look at the Pies as we close in on a grand final showdown with the Lions at the MCG.

Route to the Grand Final

Collingwood have been the team to beat throughout the AFL in 2023 and they full deserved their minor premiership success.

The Pies did suffer a couple of late losses in the regular season, but only suffered five defeats in the entire campaign, winning 18.

Collingwood finished four points clear of Brisbane at the top of the AFL ladder and also made it through to the grand final with two wins.

They were made to work very hard in both games, but as Collingwood have shown throughout the season they have what it takes to dig deep and edge the close encounters.

In the qualifying final they beat Melbourne by seven points and then in the preliminary final, edged out Greater Western Sydney by just one point.

We could be in for another close one at the MCG and Collingwood can be backed at 5.50 to win by 1-12 points.

Play-off history

Collingwood have a long and proud history, winning a total of 15 premierships in the VFL/AFL, but their last success came in 2010.

They did come close in 2018, only to lose the grand final to the West Coast Eagles.

They also made the grand final in 2002 and 2003, but lost on both occasions to Saturday’s opponents Brisbane.

Collingwood also lost the 2011 grand final to Geelong and they will be desperate to snap the losing steak and gain revenge on the Lions this weekend.

Key players for Collingwood

Nick Daicos has been one of the star players for Collingwood this season and is in with a great shout of winning the Brownlow Medal.

Daicos has been averaging 31.1 disposals a game throughout out the season and he is priced at 4.50 to win the Norm Smith medal for best on ground in the grand final.

He can also be backed at 2.15 to produce 30+ disposals in the game.

Brody Mihocek has been the biggest goal threat for Collingwood this season, averaging two a game and he can be backed at 9.00 to kick the first of the game.

When it comes to influential captains, they do not come much bigger than Darcy Moore and the Pies skipper, who averages 5.9 marks a game, is key to their chances in the grand final.
