Australia have named their squads for the white-ball tour of Scotland and England in September and young all-rounder Cooper Connolly is definitely the standout surprise selection.
The 20-year-old left-hand batter and left-arm spinner has been included in the party for the T20 matches against England and Scotland, having only played in one first-class match to date, although that was the Sheffield Shield final.
Named alongside Connolly and also included in the ODI roster was Jake Fraser-McGurk, who will no doubt be eager to try and cement his place as the successor to David Warner at the top of the batting order.
Meanwhile the team will be captained by Mitchell Marsh, with Pat Cummins rested for the whole tour, while Mitchell Starc, Glenn Maxwell and Matt Short will join up for the five one-day internationals against England.
National selector George Bailey accepted that Connolly's selection was something of a wildcard but added: "He's an exciting young talent. Hasn't played a great many games yet, but we really like his versatility."
Connolly first sprang to attention as he belted 25 not out from 13 balls to help Perth Scorchers edged home with four balls to spare to win the 2023 Big Bash final against Brisbane Heat.
More recently, on his only first-class outing to date, he made 90 & 18 as Western Australia overwhelmed Tasmania by 377 runs in the Sheffield Shield final.
That display for WA was clearly one which caught the selectors' eyes and Connolly now has an opportunity to make a mark on the international stage.
Seamers Xavier Bartlett and Spencer Johnson also get further opportunities in the T20 squad, with Australia playing three 20-over matches against both England and Scotland.
T20I squad: Mitchell Marsh (captain), Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis (wk), Spencer Johnson, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa.
While Connolly is the eye-catching selection for the 20-over matches, there is no doubt that a lot of focus will fall on explosive batter Fraser-McGurk in the five-match ODI series in England.
The 22-year-old is one of the major talents of the Aussie game, having made his name with his six-hitting prowess in both the Big Bash and the IPL.
And he will be eager to show what he can do on the international stage, having missed out on selection for the recent T20 World Cup as Warner made his final international appearances.
Fraser-McGurk, who has yet to play in a T20I but who is included in the 20-over squad for this tour, has featured in two ODIs to date, both at home to West Indies in February.
He made 10 on his debut at the SCG, before displaying his undoubted potential by blasting 41 from 18 balls in Canberra, clearing the ropes three times.
His youthful exuberance should boost a squad which also includes old-timers such as Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne, while Alex Carey also returns to the 50-over fold as back-up wicketkeeper to Josh Inglis.
