Australian Racing: Convener can produce Moe magic

There are six meetings set to take place on Friday including nine-race cards at both Moe and Gatton.

Convener for Cup success

It’s Moe Cup day at the Victoria venue with the big race coming up as the eighth race of the day.

The 2050m open handicap contest has attracted a field of nine with Claidheamh Mor expected to jump as favourite.

The five-year-old has won three of his last four starts, including by nearly six lengths in a 2500m Benchmark 78 handicap when racing wide on a soft 5 track at Moonee Valley in July.

Carleen Hefel’s mount has made just the one appearance since then, justifying favouritism in the bet365 Coleraine Cup over 1800m on a fast track at Coleraine at the end of last month.

Trained by Gemma Rielly, the son of Dundeel returned with lacerations on that occasion but sets the standard on form here, with Carleen Hefel returning to the saddle having been absent at Coleraine.

CONVENER, an import from Europe for the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace team, is preferred on this occasion however.

The pick showed good form when runner-up over 1600m in a Benchmark 78 handicap at Sandown Hillside, when making his debut for the stable at the end of March.

The five-year-old delivered his first southern-hemisphere success when going one better in a 2000m Benchmark 78 handicap at Mornington the following month.

Teodore Nugent’s mount arrives here fresh, having been spelled since a ninth at Flemington in May and he is taken to deliver a victory racing from off the pace here.

Thegirlsgotthis to salute for Gollan

Top weight Belle’s Boy is expected to have his supporters ahead of the finale at Gatton.

The race in question is a 1400m Restricted 58 handicap set to take place on a soft 5 surface.

The four-year-old has won two of his last three starts, including when racing from the front prior to saluting by one-and-a-half-lengths in a similar race to this here earlier this month.

Trained by Gregory Cornish, the gelding had an inside alley that day and barrier 14 is expected to give him issues, while the soft 5 track is against him with his best form coming on good going.

THE GIRLSGOTHIS is the selection for this one, having registered her first victory when racing from the front, prior to delivering a half-length victory in a 1400m maiden on a good 4 track here on 5th October.

The selection tackles the same course and distance here and appeared to appreciate the drop down from metro level racing, having finished fifth over 1200m at Doomben on her penultimate start.

The daughter of Headwater ran adequately when fourth of eight on debut at Sunshine Coast on her only previous start on a wet track and she should handle underfoot conditions here.

Trainer Tony Gollan boasts an impressive 50% strike-rate (4/8) here in the last 12 months and his representative, one of two runners he has on the card, can help him improve on that.

Land for Taree triumph

The fifth race at Taree is the Bakewell Haulage Krambach Cup over 1600m and SCORCHED LAND looks capable of defying top weight here.

The six-year-old hasn’t been beaten by far in recent starts, including when beaten less than two lengths into sixth over 1200m in a Benchmark 64 handicap at Newcastle three starts back.

The step up in distance has appeared no issue subsequently, including when beaten just over half-a-length into third when tackling a handicap over 1609m on a good 4 track here on 24th September.

The selection has been freshened since that course and distance effort and, with a decent barrier, Koby Jennings’ mount looks capable of delivering a victory here.
