The Coolmore Stud Stakes is a Group 1 Thoroughbreds horse race and is viewed by many as the ‘Grand Final’ for the best sprinters in the land.

The Coolmore Stud Stakes is for three-year-olds only, and is raced over 1200m at Flemington at set weights.

The Coolmore Stud Stakes takes place on Saturday 4th November, just a few days before the Melbourne Cup that always takes place on the first Tuesday of the month.

The Coolmore Stud Stakes is part of a massive day of racing at Flemington, as the Victoria Derby and Empire Rose Stakes take place on the same day.

The Coolmore Stud Stakes was originally known as the Ascot Vale Stakes and was first raced way back in 1863.

Back then it was also a race for two-year-olds and was raced over five furlongs (1000m).

It switched to being a race for three-year-olds in 1969 and was won by the legendary colt Vain.

The Coolmore Stud Stakes was upgraded from Group 2 status to Group 1 in 2006 after being switched to the same day as the Victoria Derby and is now one of the most high-profile races on the calendar.

In Secret won the 2022 edition of the Coolmore Stud Stakes for trainer James Cummings and jockey James McDonald.

There have been some memorable winners of the race throughout the years, including Vain in 1969, Manikato in 1978, Sepoy in 2011 and Zoustar in 2013.

What is the prize money for the Coolmore Stud Stakes?

The total prize fund for the Empire Rose Stakes is $2milliom for the 2023 race, after being raised to that amount in 2022.

The winner of the race will receive $1.2million. Second place will pick up $360,000, while third will scoop $180,000.

Each of the top eight horses will win prize money with sixth, seventh and eighth all picking up $40,000 for their efforts.

Who are the favourites to win the Coolmore Stud Stakes?

Cylinder is currently the hot fancy to win the Coolmore Stud Stakes and can be backed at 4.50.
