NRL: Cowboys out to snap losing streak

North Queensland Cowboys need to bounce back to winning ways against the Dolphins if they are to keep their top-eight hopes alive.

The Cowboys remain right in the mix for a place in finals with two games remaining, but they have hit a sticky patch at just the wrong time.

A victory against a Dolphins side on the slide is an absolute must, but Wayne Bennett’s injury-ridden outfit will be playing for pride.

Suncorp Stadium will be buzzing on a Friday night and we could be in for a fiery derby clash under the lights.

Dolphins solid first season

The Dolphins may have won just one game in the last 10, but it has been a solid first season in the NRL, and one for them to build on.

They got off to a fast start and flirted with a place in the top eight at one point, but injuries have started to bite, resulting in them sliding down the ladder.

Bennett’s men still have two games remaining against the Cowboys and Warriors and will look to end their debut campaign on a high note.

Despite the losing streak, the Dolphins have not been blown away by the opposition. Indeed five of their recent defeats have been by 10 points or less.

Back in April the Dolphins beat the Cowboys by 10 points in the reverse fixture and we could be in for another close battle at Suncorp on Friday night.

The Dolphins can be backed at 10.00 to repeat the victory they pulled off earlier in the season by winning by 6-10 points.

They are handed a huge boost with the return of Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow from a head injury, while Jamayne Isaako will be a huge threat once again.

The winger scored 20 points against the Cowboys in the win and can be backed at 2.15 to score at anytime.

Cowboys need to snap losing streak

The Cowboys have lost the last three games against the Titans, Broncos and Sharks to slip from seventh place on the ladder to ninth.

They still have a chance to pip South Sydney Rabbitohs to eighth spot, but really need to win their last two games to make it.

And with a daunting trip to face the Panthers in the last round, a win over the Cowboys is an absolute must.

There is a chance that Penrith could rest their stars in that game, and the Cowboys will be hoping they wrap up the minor premiership this weekend.

Defence has been an issue for the Cowboys, conceding over 30 points in the last two games, and they will need to tighten up if they are to extend their season.

Creativity is not usually an issue though and Scott Drinkwater has been one of the best fullbacks in the competition in 2023.

He has chipped in with 24 try-assists this season, with only Shaun Johnson of the Warriors producing more with 25.

Drinkwater can also be backed at 11.00 to grab the first try of the game.

Jeremiah Nanai is missing with a shoulder injury and will be a big loss, but Heilum Luki is a solid replacement and comes into the side.
