The 18th season of the Indian Premier League kicks off in Kolkata on Saturday March 22nd, when the reigning champion Knight Riders play host to Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Eden Gardens.
The Knight Riders claimed their third IPL title in 2024 by thrashing Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets in the final, which was played at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
That success leaves KKR behind only Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians on the honours roll, with both of those franchises having been crowned IPL champions on five occasions.
The 2025 IPL season gets underway on Sunday March 22nd with the meeting of the Knight Riders and Royal Challengers and the competition draws to a close with the final, also scheduled for Eden Gardens, on Sunday May 25th.
A full fixture list has yet to be released for the complete 2025 season.
There are 10 teams involved in the 2025 IPL season and among the venues being used is the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, which, with a capacity of 132,000 is the largest cricket stadium in the world.
Other well-known venues include the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad.

Although listed in one league ladder, the 10 teams are split into Group A and Group B and play each team in their group twice, as well as one of the teams in the other group.
They then face the remaining four teams just once and the top four on the regular season ladder progress to the Playoffs.
There first and second play in Qualifier 1, with the winner going straight through to the final.
Third and fourth play an Eliminator, with the winner of that match taking on the loser of Qualifier 1 for the other final spot.

The first season of the IPL took place in 2008, with eight teams taking part and there have been a number of franchise changes over the course of the 17 completed seasons.
The addition of Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants in 2022 saw the competition move back to a 10-team line-up which had been in place in 2011.
Rajasthan Royals won the inaugural IPL title back in 2008, since when Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians have both won five titles, Kolkata Knight Riders three and Sunrisers Hyderabad two.
Gujarat Titans claimed their only success to date in their first year in the competition, in 2022, before losing out in the final to the Super Kings 12 months later.
Mumbai Indians are the current market leaders at 5.50, with Chennai Super Kings 6.50 and Sunrisers Hyderabad 7.00.
The reigning champion Knight Riders are priced at 7.50, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru are a 9.00 shot.
