Australia stars in the 2025 IPL: Starc switches to Capitals

There are 15 Australian players included in the rosters of the 10 teams taking part in the 2025 Indian Premier League, where Kolkata Knight Riders will hope to retain their title without the services of Mitchell Starc.

Veteran left-arm pacer Starc has moved to Delhi Capitals for the coming campaign and his like-for-like replacement at KKR is fellow Aussie Spencer Johnson.

Thirteen other Aussies are sprinkled across a further five franchises, with last season’s beaten finalists Sunrisers Hyderabad having three Baggy Greens among their ranks and Punjab Kings having a five-man Australian contingent.

2025 IPL

Starc moves on from Knight Riders

Having been named as Player of the Match in the 2024 IPL final, Starc was not retained by KKR and was taken sixth in the player auction, being snapped up by a Capitals franchise who also have Jake Fraser-McGurk in their squad.

Delhi missed out on finals last season after finishing sixth on the IPL ladder and their prospects for the coming campaign would appear to have taken a major hit with Rishabh Pant having left to join Lucknow Super Giants.

The Capitals are out at 10.00 to win the IPL title in 2025, with the former Daredevils still awaiting a first title success.

As Starc heads away from Kolkata, Johnson arrives to take his place, having made little impression in five appearances for Gujarat Titans last season.

However, he has impressed in the last couple of seasons in the Big Bash League with Brisbane Heat and has also shown up well on the international stage in his eight T20I outings to date.

A repeat title success for the three-time champion Knight Riders is a 7.00 shot, which leaves them third in the market behind the 5.50 Mumbai Indians and the 6.50 Chennai Super Kings.

The Indians have no Aussies among their ranks, with fast bowler Nathan Ellis is the only Australian player on the Super Kings roster.

Cummins in line to lead Sunrisers challenge

Having lost out in the 2024 final, Sunrisers Hyderabad will be eager to go one better this time around and they have three Aussies hoping to help them do just that.

Test captain Cummins will hope to regain full fitness to lead their bid, having been ruled out of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy and the Sunrisers are 8.00 in the outright market.

Cummins is again joined by left-hander Travis Head, who has been one of the game's leading batters over the last couple of years, including racking up 567 runs in the IPL last season at an astonishing strike-rate of 191.55.

Completing the Aussie trio is ace leg-spinner Adam Zampa, who opted out of the IPL altogether last season, having previously featured for Rajasthan Royals in 2023.

Kings lead the way with five Aussies

The Kings take the award for having the most Australians on their roster, with veteran all-rounders Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis backed up by wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis, all-rounder Aaron Hardie and pacer Xavier Bartlett.

Punjab have an IPL record which is nothing to write home about, with their best performance a run to the 2014 final, where they were beaten by three wickets by the Knight Riders.

Despite having made big changes since finishing down in ninth place last season, the Kings are still propping up the overall market, currently sitting alongside the Royals on 11.00.

The final three Australians hoping to impress in the 2025 IPL are all-rounder Mitch Marsh at the Super Giants and Josh Hazlewood and Tim David at Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

RCB are 8.00 to be crowned champions this season, while the Super Giants are out at 10.00.
